Today, The Chronicle serves the higher-education and nonprofit communities through two industry-leading news and information resources: The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The Chronicle is seeking a Senior Reporter, Political Influence, to join its Editorial team. This is a remote position and can sit in CA, TX, FL, WA, NY, NJ or DC. The Daily Briefing newsletter is The Chronicle’s cornerstone product for subscribers – an insightful, expert morning roundup that unpacks the news and trends that define higher ed. The newsletter tells tens of thousands of The Chronicle’s most dedicated and engaged readers what they need to know to start their days.

This senior reporter will be the lead author and owner of the newsletter – delivering news and insight, with verve and voice, that makes the Daily Briefing appointment reading for Chronicle subscribers.

What you’ll do:

  • Report and write Daily Briefing newsletter.
  • Help drive strategy to grow the Daily Briefing and make its readers more loyal and engaged. In doing so, increase satisfaction and renewal rates of Chronicle subscribers.
  • Represent The Chronicle as an expert voice in the public sphere.
  • Work productively and respectfully with readers, sources and colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years of experience in a professional newsroom.
  • Expertise in certain higher education beats is required.
  • A track record of big-picture thinking, strong writing, and clean, accurate copy.
  • A history of tenacious, fair reporting.
  • Experience in developing, nurturing, and/or producing digital-journalism products.
  • Ability to conduct reader research, and to synthesize reader feedback and audience analytics.
  • Knowledge of New York Times Style preferred.
  • Proficiency with Brightspot or other content management systems preferred.
  • Ability to synthesize complex issues with nuance and authority.
