The mission of the Arizona State Board of Nursing is to protect and promote the welfare of public by ensuring that each person holding a nursing license or certificate is competent to practice safely. The Board fulfills its mission through the regulation of the practice of nursing and the approval of nursing education programs. The mission, derived from the Nursing Practice Act, supersedes the interest of any individual, the nursing profession, or any special interest group.

Job Summary:

This position is part of the Alternative to Discipline Department (ATD), a non-disciplinary, non-public monitoring department for Registered Nurses, Licensed Practice Nurses, and Advanced Practical Registered Nurses. The ATD programs are designed for nurses with substance use disorders, medical or mental health conditions, nurses at risk for these disorders/conditions, or nurses with a combination of these disorders/conditions.

The Nursing Board Consultant (NBC) investigates both alleged nurse practice and non-nurse practice violations of the Nurse Practice Act, and prepares a report and recommends appropriate disciplinary action to the Board.

This position investigates all suspected violations of the Nurse Practice Act received about individual licensees, applicants or certificate holders, and applies and interprets Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations and policies regarding nursing practice.

Job Duties:

During the Nursing Board Consultant’s investigation of complex or sensitive allegations of legal or regulatory violations, the Nursing Board Consultant:

  • Interviews and collects evidence; examines and analyzes medical records, medical documentation, legal documents, evaluations, healthcare and employment related records; reviews and detects improprieties and deviations from the standard of practice, determining if a violation of the Nurse Practice Act has occurred; prepares an investigative report for the Board, including Board action recommendations; and prepares consent agreements for use in administrative hearings
  • Presents cases at Board Meetings and testifies in administrative hearings as an official witness and enters relevant case information and documents into the database to track and monitor open cases and ensure accurate status and timely resolution of complaints
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge in the area of nursing practice, terminology, and meaning of the Nurse Practice Act; the methods and principles for writing investigative reports; and techniques/principles for conducting investigations
  • Skills in extracting and utilizing information from statutes, legal documents, evaluation forms and related records; eliciting information in an investigation interview; interpersonal relations as applied to Respondent, Complainants, employers, and other state Boards of Nursing; and organization, prioritization and follow through
  • Ability to work well with others; prioritize, plan, analyze, coordinate and manage a caseload; maintain objectivity; produce timely and accurate reports and documentation; and in presenting cases in a Board meeting or hearing. Basic computer skills including working with Word and Google. Eligible for remote work days after initial training is completed
Selective Preference(s):
  • This position requires a current, unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse through the Arizona State Board of Nursing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
