Shatterproof

Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the United States. Founded in 2013 by Gary Mendell following the tragic loss of his son Brian to substance use disorder, the organization has emerged as a leading voice in transforming how America understands, treats, and supports individuals affected by addiction. The organization operates as a tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, with a mission to create a world where addiction never defines or ends a life.

The organization focuses on key priorities that make measurable differences in saving lives: revolutionizing addiction treatment systems, ending the stigma surrounding substance use disorders, and educating and empowering communities with evidence-based resources for prevention, treatment, and recovery. Shatterproof has developed innovative programs including Treatment Atlas, a resource to help individuals find quality addiction treatment, and the Shatterproof Addiction Stigma Index (SASI), the largest survey of public attitudes about substance use disorder in the United States. Through advocacy efforts, public education campaigns, and community organizing, Shatterproof works to foster tolerance and compassion while dismantling the discrimination and judgment associated with this devastating disease that affects nearly 49 million Americans.
