Manager, Cloud Optimization Engineering (FinOps)

Platform Engineering | Multiple Locations

About the Role

We are looking for a strategic, technically deep leader to build and lead our Cloud Optimization Engineering function. This team operates at the intersection of Engineering, Finance, and Product, and plays a critical role in shaping how we scale our SaaS platform efficiently.

This is not a traditional cost optimization or CloudOps role. Success in this position comes from the ability to influence decisions across a wide range of engineering teams, translate complex technical systems into financial impact, and challenge assumptions to drive better outcomes.

You will define how cost is understood, communicated, and acted on across the organization—ensuring that as we grow, we do so with intentional, data-driven tradeoffs between cost, performance, and scalability.

Responsibilities

Shape Cost-Aware Engineering Decisions

  • Influence architecture and design decisions across engineering teams by providing clear visibility into cost drivers, tradeoffs, and long-term implications

  • Partner with teams to embed cost-awareness into day-to-day engineering decisions, without relying on direct ownership or mandate

  • Proactively challenge assumptions and guide teams toward solutions that balance cost, performance, and reliability

Bridge Engineering, Finance, and Leadership

  • Act as a translator between Engineering, FP&A, and executive leadership by turning complex infrastructure usage and architecture into clear financial narratives and actionable insights

  • Ensure financial goals are grounded in technical reality, and engineering decisions are understood in financial terms

  • Support planning cycles, budgeting, and long-range forecasting with accurate, data-driven models

Drive Strategic Cost Management

  • Own the company’s approach to cloud cost visibility, forecasting, and optimization across AWS, GCP, Azure, and SaaS vendors

  • Lead cost modeling for major initiatives (e.g., new product launches, architectural changes, scaling events)

  • Identify and drive high-impact opportunities to improve efficiency—both through optimization and by influencing upstream decisions

  • Partner in vendor strategy, including commitment management, pricing models, and negotiations

Build Systems, Tooling, and Processes

  • Establish scalable frameworks for cost allocation, anomaly detection, and unit economics (e.g., cost per customer, product, or workload)

  • Ensure engineers have actionable, accessible insights into their cost footprint

  • Drive adoption of best practices in tagging, attribution, and cost observability

Lead and Grow a High-Impact Team

  • Build and lead a team of engineers focused on cloud optimization and cost-aware systems

  • Set clear priorities aligned with company-level financial and technical goals

  • Develop a culture of ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement

  • Serve as the executive-facing owner of cloud cost strategy and outcomes

Qualifications & Traits

Core Experience

  • 7+ years in software engineering, infrastructure, or platform engineering roles

  • 3+ years of experience leading or mentoring engineers or technical teams

  • Deep experience with public cloud environments (AWS preferred) and modern SaaS architectures

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, data-intensive workloads, and cloud cost drivers

Strategic & Analytical Thinking

  • Ability to evaluate and communicate tradeoffs between cost, performance, and scalability

  • Experience modeling the financial impact of technical decisions or system changes

  • Systems-level thinker who can connect architecture decisions to business outcomes

Influence & Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to influence engineering teams and drive change without direct authority

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical, financial, and executive audiences

  • Confidence in challenging assumptions and guiding teams toward better decisions

Financial & Operational Acumen

  • Experience working with or alongside FP&A, finance, or business stakeholders

  • Familiarity with cloud billing models, pricing constructs, and cost allocation approaches

  • Experience contributing to forecasting, budgeting, or financial planning processes

Leadership

  • Track record of building trust across teams and driving cross-functional initiatives

  • Ability to create clarity in ambiguous, evolving environments

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability for outcomes

Nice to Have

  • Experience in FinOps or cloud financial management practices

    Multi-cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Experience with cost observability tools (e.g., Cloudability, CloudZero)

  • Exposure to unit economics modeling in a SaaS environment

Why This Role Matters

Cloud infrastructure is one of our largest and fastest-growing investments. This role ensures that we scale efficiently—making intentional, well-informed decisions that balance cost with performance and innovation.

You will play a key role in improving margins, enabling smarter product decisions, and helping the business grow sustainably.

Founded in 2000 by Alan Matthews, Tas Giakouminakis, and Chad Loder, Rapid7 embarked on a mission to provide innovative cybersecurity solutions. The company was established with the vision of helping organizations effectively detect and respond to security threats. Alan Matthews brought his extensive cybersecurity expertise, Tas Giakouminakis provided the technical software development knowledge, and Chad Loder contributed his entrepreneurial vision to shape the company's strategic direction. What began as a focused endeavor to address the evolving landscape of cyber threats has grown into a global leader in vulnerability management and incident detection. Over the years, Rapid7 has consistently pushed the boundaries of security technology through innovation and strategic partnerships. A key milestone in their journey was the launch of Nexpose, their flagship vulnerability management solution, in 2007. This was followed by the strategic acquisition of Metasploit, a renowned open-source penetration testing tool, in 2010, significantly expanding their product portfolio. The company's growth trajectory continued, leading to its initial public offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ stock exchange in 2012 (though another source indicates 2015). In 2015, Rapid7 further enhanced its threat detection capabilities by acquiring Logentries, a provider of cloud-based log management and analytics solutions. The introduction of InsightIDR in 2018, a cloud-based SIEM solution, marked another significant step in empowering organizations to detect and respond to security incidents in real-time.

Today, Rapid7 is a leading cybersecurity solutions provider, dedicated to making successful security tools and practices accessible to all. Their Insight Platform technology, expert services, and thought-leading research enable over 9,000 customers worldwide to improve their security programs and innovate safely. As technology continues to advance rapidly, every company has essentially become a technology company, inherently creating new security risks. The migration to the cloud and the proliferation of connected devices present security teams with an increasingly complex and unpredictable attack surface. Rapid7 believes that as cybersecurity challenges escalate, two primary factors hinder organizations from effectively managing their security exposure: the complexity of security tools and the scarcity of qualified cybersecurity professionals to manage them. These challenges are compounded for resource-constrained organizations. Rapid7 aims to bridge this 'Security Achievement Gap' by simplifying complex security problems. Their solutions empower teams to more effectively reduce vulnerabilities, monitor malicious behavior, investigate and shut down attacks, and automate routine tasks. This is all supported by a dedicated team of security researchers and consultants who bring real-world attacker behavior knowledge and emerging vulnerability insights directly to their customers. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Rapid7 operates globally, serving a diverse range of industries including technology, energy, financial services, healthcare, and government.
