Engineering Manager


Job description

Nurture and grow the Prisma development team. In the coming year we will grow from two small teams with an informal leadership structure to several full teams. Your job will be to lead this process and build an engineering organisation with robust leadership and fast-moving motivated individuals.

Bring Technical Expertise

Your ability to lead the team must be rooted in mutual trust and respect. As such, you must have a deep technical expertise and be able to contribute meaningfully to our various software projects. The first 3 months on the job you will spend most of your time writing code.
Prisma's core product is a database proxy that exposes a GraphQL API. It is written in Scala and Rust. Experience with either is a plus, but not a must. It is more important that you have experience building a high-scale server product. You should take a look at to familiarise yourself with our various open source projects.

Bridge product and engineering

Prisma has a very product-focused culture. As the Engineering Manager you will be working closely with the product team to define our roadmap and shape new features. It's important that you reach close alignment with the founders on product decisions and are able to convey the vision convincingly to colleagues and external parties. You should be able to guide the engineers on your team who are working on very technical product specs.

Create process and structure

Making sure our engineering team keeps operating as a well-oiled machine as we scale up is critical to our ability to deliver on our vision. This will be your responsibility. We are developing a mix of open- and closed-source projects as well as supporting projects that are primarily driven by the community. You will need to track this diverse set of software projects and build out structures and process to improve engineering velocity and ensure internal and external engineers have a great experience.

You will drive the entire development process including estimation, sprint planning, releases as well as developing a public roadmap.

Lead and mentor

Prisma is a small team of highly motivated individuals. As we grow the team, many of your colleagues will face challenges and grow into roles they haven't filled before. An important part of your job is to provide mentorship and coaching to ensure that individuals on the team has the support they need to excel. Prior experience growing individuals into more senior roles and responsibilities as well as implementing structured management frameworks is a requirement for this job.

About you

  • Passion for leading teams and developing employees
  • Several years of experience as a software engineer delivering large backend systems (Rust is a plus)
  • Still eager to get your hands dirty with day-to-day development tasks
  • Experience in agile project and team management
  • High aspiration for quality, balanced with pragmatism and a sense of urgency
  • Effective English communication skills

Remote Work

We are a remote-first organisation with an office based in Berlin, Germany. Whether you would like to work remotely, or from the office in Berlin is up to you! We offer a generous relocation package if you would prefer to join us here in Berlin. 
That being said, for the sake of maintaining an effective working relationship, we are restricted to hiring remote employees from a timezone band ranging from GMT-5 to GMT+3.
