About People's Self-Help Housing
We are People's Self-Help Housing (PSHH), and for over 50 years, we have been dedicated to building a better future for communities along California's Central Coast. Our journey began in 1970, born from a grassroots movement inspired by the Fair Housing Act. A group of passionate local leaders and concerned citizens came together with a shared vision: to address the critical lack of affordable housing for low-income families and individuals with special needs. This vision became our mission, and we've been working tirelessly ever since to build affordable homes complemented by site-based services that empower individuals and strengthen the very fabric of our communities. Our roots are firmly planted in the belief that a safe, stable home is the foundation upon which lives can be transformed. We've seen firsthand how affordable housing leads to improved health outcomes, greater educational achievements, and enhanced career opportunities for our residents.
Our work is multifaceted, extending far beyond simply constructing buildings. We build vibrant, resilient neighborhoods where people are proud to live. From apartments and townhomes to single-family houses, we provide a diverse range of housing options for families, seniors, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and those who have experienced homelessness. One of our cornerstone programs is the self-build model, a testament to our belief in empowerment through sweat equity. Since our inception, we've helped over 1,200 families build their own homes, contributing their labor as a down payment and forging strong community bonds in the process. In addition to homeownership opportunities, we own and manage over 2,000 rental units, providing welcoming homes for more than 5,000 residents. Our commitment doesn't end when the keys are handed over. Through our site-based learning centers and numerous partnerships, we offer a wide array of supportive services, including after-school programs, college prep, and resources designed to promote wellness and connection. We are more than just a housing organization; we are a community partner, an advocate, and a builder of brighter futures.
