The Role:

The Field Medical Advisor role is pivotal in establishing and nurturing relationships within the medical community, including healthcare practitioners, policy makers, payers, and healthcare administrators to ensure understanding of our science and data and to gather beliefs, information, and thoughts from across the healthcare ecosystem. This role is dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes through the peer-to-peer scientific exchange of Moderna’s mRNA platform science, fostering trust, and encouraging engagement through personalized and digital interactions. The Field Medical Advisor plays a key role in establishing our share of thought and insight concept with the medical and healthcare community.

Territory:

West Coast US (ideally located in the Pacific Northwest or California and near a major airport).

In this role, you will be at the forefront of Moderna’s mission to deliver new mRNA-based therapies and vaccines, requiring a blend of scientific expertise, strategic thinking, strong internal collaboration, and a commitment to ethical engagement. Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Strategic Engagement: Develop and execute territory engagement plans aligned to the medical priorities, leveraging a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare ecosystem and therapeutic areas to share Moderna’s science and data effectively and in alignment with company strategy and desires of the customers with whom they engage.

  • Communication Excellence: Utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills to simplify complex scientific topics, understand beliefs, information, and thoughts shared by customers, engage a broad range of customers, employing tools like Moderna's Scientific Communications Platform and generative AI offerings to make the engagement more impactful.

  • Medical Intelligence: Listen with true curiosity to gather and report robust beliefs, information, and thoughts from customers to inform broader medical insights. These medical insights are derived from compiling and analyzing different types of information and opinions to form valuable conclusions that identify and help address unmet medical needs, advance medical knowledge, identify data gaps, and help refine strategies to enhance patient care.

  • Stakeholder Interaction: Engage with a broad spectrum of people within the medical and healthcare community including Key Opinion Leaders, scientific societies, public health institutions at the national and / or regional level, advisory and professional bodies and associations, academic and research institutions, advisory and regulatory bodies, applying strategic and empathetic listening and providing scientific support that aligns with Moderna’s objectives.

  • Scientific Expertise: Engage in rich scientific dialogue about Moderna’s mRNA platform and share up-to-date clinical data and scientific concepts aligned to the scientific narrative across Moderna’s therapeutic areas, including clinical trial data and research findings, to support the medical and scientific community. You will be expected understand, at a high level, and be able to engage in scientific dialogue on Health Economic (HEOR) and Real-World Data/Evidence (RWD/RWE).

  • Enhancement of Patient Care and Outcomes: Works collaboratively with Moderna’s teams and with healthcare professionals across the healthcare ecosystem to understand problems and design solutions that enhance patient care and outcomes.

  • Management of Medical Strategies: Successfully execute medical engagement activities including advisory boards, partnerships, round tables, and conferences. Successfully navigate Moderna’s processes related to Fellowships, Grants, Sponsorships, and Investigator Sponsored Studies.

  • Compliance and Reporting: Adhere to ethical standards and protocols, promptly documenting your work in the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, reporting adverse events and product quality complaints.

  • Community Involvement: Actively participate in your healthcare communities to understand and communicate local and regional challenges to Moderna, contribute to improving patient pathways, identifying unmet needs, and proposing solutions. This requires building and maintaining strong relationships with Moderna stakeholders across various functions.

  • Knowledge and Development: Continuously develop yourself to maintain deep knowledge of Moderna’s mRNA platform and its application, staying informed on industry trends, regulations, healthcare policies, digital technologies, emotional intelligence, and engagement skills. Occasionally seek opportunities to mentor, coach, and support other’s development.

  • Digital Proficiency: Effectively utilize digital and AI-powered tools for engagement, demonstrating a "Digital First" mindset, and seeking innovative ways to enhance interactions.

  • Collaboration and Training: Work closely with internal teams, customers, and other stakeholders to share knowledge and contribute to internal training efforts.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications):

  • Master’s degree is required.

  • 3-5 years of relevant industry experience and / or a minimum of 2 years in field medical roles.

  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken).

  • Familiarity with local regulatory environment and a basic understanding across other key regions (e.g. FDA, EMA, and other regional health authorities).

  • Proficiency in digital technology (Microsoft Office Suite) and agility with virtual presentation platforms (e.g. MS Teams, Zoom, Webex).

  • Understanding of the process and need for thorough and timely documentation in a CRM system.

  • Willing to travel up to 75% within the assigned region.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Terminal degree is a Scientific Discipline (MD, PhD, PharmD) preferred.

  • Experience in medical affairs, clinical development, market access, particularly in mRNA vaccines, immunology, or infectious diseases.

  • Proven ability to curate and manage robust KOL lists and execute strategic territory engagement plans.

  • Advanced proficiency in pre-engagement planning, scientific dialogue, and empathic listening to gather and analyze medical insights.

  • Established relationships within the medical community and a strong understanding of healthcare ecosystems, including understanding of the local, regional, and national policy and regulatory agencies that influence patient care.

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate compliance frameworks and interact ethically within a field-based role.

  • Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.

  • Proficiency in additional global languages to facilitate regional and local communication.

  • Knowledge of local health economics, real-world data/evidence (RWD/RWE) and ability to engage in scientific discussions on these topics.

  • Demonstrated expertise in using digital-first approaches for stakeholder engagement, including ChatGPT, innovative platforms and tools in markets with variable technology access.
