This position is ideal for an experienced media professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is available to support urgent editorial needs, including during breaking news cycles and high-traffic publishing windows.
This is a high-impact, decision-intensive role requiring sharp judgment, creative problem-solving, and a deep knowledge of digital rights and visual strategy. You'll be entrusted with sourcing powerful imagery, clearing usage rights, and enhancing visuals that elevate the storytelling across McClatchy’s platforms.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Curate high-impact visuals from both subscription and non-subscription sources, with a focus on editorial value and viral appeal
- Rapidly secure permissions and clear rights for breaking news imagery under deadline pressure
- Evaluate copyright risks of social media and non-traditional content to ensure compliant usage
- Conduct advanced photo research from non-subscription sources to support editorial teams
- Strategically manage negotiations for exclusive paparazzi assets with budget and editorial impact in mind
- Adapt print visuals for digital formats, ensuring all rights are cleared and assets optimized for online presentation
- Perform high-level Photoshop edits to meet visual and branding standards for digital content
- Provide technical guidance and visual support to editorial staff, including assistance with image sourcing and processing
- Stay informed on emerging tools and AI-based innovations for media editing, sourcing, and rights management
- Other duties as assigned by management

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Deep expertise in digital image rights and copyright law, with a proactive approach to legal risk management
- An editorial mindset—you don’t just select images; you shape visual narratives that resonate and engage
- Advanced Photoshop skills and an eye for detail in enhancing visuals for online publication
- A sharp instinct for what makes content go viral, along with knowledge of pop culture and media trends
- Ability to juggle high-priority assignments under time-sensitive conditions
- Experience handling paparazzi image licensing and navigating high-stakes negotiations
- A passion for new technologies and an interest in leveraging AI to improve media workflows and efficiency
- Familiarity with Content Management Systems
- Track record for innovation, learning and using new skills and technology, especially AI.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to interact professionally and build relationships and develop sources with a diverse array of people.
- Ability to work well, be professional and courteous with a variety of editors, staff at all levels.
- Computer proficiency (MS Office, Digital editing, web search, databases)
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends
- Must be able to work remotely while contributing to a team environment
- Regular and reliable attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited college or university; preferably in Journalism or Writing, or the equivalent education, experience, skills and knowledge needed to perform the tasks and responsibilities of the position.
- Three to five years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
The anticipated base pay for this position is between $35 - $40 an hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, department equity and relevant education.
