Calling all originals: At Levi Strauss & Co., you can be yourself — and be part of something bigger. We're a company of people who like to forge our own path and leave the world better than we found it. Who believe that what makes us different makes us stronger. So add your voice. Make an impact. Find your fit — and your future.
In this role, you will lead the API Solutions & Gateway team and operate the enterprise API platform as a product: secure access, policy enforcement, lifecycle governance, observability, and reliability. The mission is to enable domain-aligned teams to deliver secure, scalable APIs and integrations through standardized platform capabilities, clear guardrails, and measurable operational outcomes. You will report to the Director of Integrations in this role. MuleSoft experience and exposure to Agentic AI is also a strong plus.
About the Job
- Lead the API gateway and API management platform strategy, roadmap, adoption, and operational performance across domains.
- Lead the API squad engineers in establishing the enablement cadence, engineering standards, and measurable execution outcomes.
- Establish and operationalize a domain enablement model that equips domain squads to own delivery and operations end-to-end. Provide defined engagement patterns, accelerated onboarding, enforceable architectural guardrails, and production-readiness criteria.
- Establish and enforce API design and lifecycle standards: contract-first development, semantic versioning, backward compatibility rules, deprecation, and documentation.
- Deliver standardized gateway controls: authentication/authorization patterns, policy enforcement, rate limiting/quotas, threat protection, and tenant isolation.
- Implement governance through automation: policy-as-code, CI/CD quality gates, environment promotion controls, and audit-ready change traceability.
- Provide reusable platform capabilities that accelerate delivery: reference implementations, templates, shared policies, and self-service onboarding workflows.
- Own end-to-end API and integration observability: centralized logs/metrics/traces, distributed tracing strategy, correlation standards, dashboards, and actionable alerting with runbooks.
- Establish reliability engineering practices: SLO/SLI definition, incident response, post-incident reviews, problem management, performance testing, and capacity planning.
- Partner with Security, Architecture, and domain leadership to align platform controls, risk posture, roadmap tradeoffs, cost-to-serve optimization, and emerging agentic enablement needs.
About You
- 7+ years in API platforms, integration engineering, platform engineering, or architecture roles, including 3+ years leading teams.
- Proven ownership of a production API gateway/API management ecosystem supporting multiple teams and high request volumes.
- Demonstrated experience as an enablement leader for federated/domain teams: building reusable platform services, coaching adoption, and driving standards at scale without centralizing delivery.
- Deep API security expertise: OAuth2/OIDC, JWT validation, mTLS, service-to-service authorization, secrets management, and certificate lifecycle management.
- Experience implementing gateway controls: rate limiting/quotas, spike arrest, threat mitigation integration, and tenant isolation.
- Contract-first and lifecycle discipline at scale: semantic versioning, compatibility guarantees, deprecation policies, and breaking-change prevention.
- Reliability engineering: definition and operation of SLOs/SLIs, incident command, post-incident reviews, and measurable reduction in repeat incidents/MTTR.
- End-to-end observability ownership: centralized logging, metrics instrumentation, distributed tracing, correlation IDs, alert tuning, and operational runbooks.
- Performance engineering depth: load/stress testing, latency targets, capacity planning, tuning, and peak readiness.
- Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive adoption across federated engineering organizations.
- API Platform (MuleSoft huge plus): Strong leadership operating an enterprise API platform, ideally with MuleSoft Anypoint, spanning API management and gateway/runtime operations, asset/catalog governance and reuse, monitoring/alerting, and secure hybrid connectivity across cloud and on-prem.
- Agentic (great plus): Hands-on experience applying AI agents to engineering or operations (e.g., automated design reviews, policy compliance, incident triage, runbook execution, guided remediation) with well-defined guardrails including auditability, human-in-the-loop approval, data boundaries, and controlled automation scope.
