As an Engineering Manager, Data, you will lead a small but highly skilled team of data engineers responsible for building and maintaining scalable, secure, and reliable data infrastructure. You will oversee the development of batch and real-time data pipelines, data lake architectures, and database optimization, ensuring alignment with business objectives. This role combines technical leadership, hands-on execution, and strategic oversight, allowing you to mentor engineers, drive operational excellence, and champion best practices across data systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, advocate for innovative solutions, and ensure data integrity, quality, and compliance. The position requires a proactive leader who thrives in a fast-paced, fully remote environment while delivering high-impact results.
Accountabilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 4-5 data engineers, providing technical guidance, career development, and performance feedback.
- Architect, oversee, and contribute to the deployment of secure, scalable, and highly available batch and real-time data pipelines.
- Guide the implementation and optimization of data lake architectures for handling structured and unstructured data.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including developers, analysts, and data scientists to integrate data engineering services and deliver reliable, clean data.
- Ensure data systems achieve high availability and performance targets, participating in incident response and on-call rotations.
- Uphold data quality, governance, and compliance standards, implementing monitoring tools and recommending team headcount adjustments as needed.
- Facilitate agile development processes, manage resource allocation, project prioritization, hiring, and onboarding.
- Stay current on industry trends in data engineering and cloud technologies, fostering continuous improvement and innovation within the team.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering or related fields, with 2-3+ years in a leadership or management role.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience in the software industry.
- Hands-on experience building and managing scalable batch and real-time data pipelines using structured and unstructured data.
- Familiarity with orchestration tools such as Prefect, Airflow, or Dagster.
- Strong expertise in streaming technologies (e.g., Apache Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Apache Flink, GCP Pub/Sub).
- Knowledge of data lake architectures and tools (e.g., S3, Glue, Delta Lake) with depth in multiple product areas.
- Proficiency in database performance analysis and optimization, preferably with Redshift and Postgres.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like CDK or Terraform.
- Strong software engineering foundation in Python, Java, PHP, or Ruby, with the ability to deliver full-featured products.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and mentoring skills, with experience motivating teams and presenting technical guidance.
- Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations and act with incomplete data.
