Hindawi Limited was founded in 1997 by Ahmed Hindawi and Nagwa Abdel-Mottaleb in Cairo, Egypt, with a mission to make academic research more accessible. For many researchers, the traditional subscription-based publishing model presented significant barriers, limiting the reach and impact of their work. Hindawi addressed this challenge by becoming one of the first publishers to fully embrace the open access model. This customer-centric approach ensures that authors' findings are freely and immediately available to a global audience, fostering greater collaboration and accelerating the pace of discovery. By removing paywalls, Hindawi empowers researchers, educators, and the public to build upon a foundation of shared knowledge, ensuring that valuable insights are not confined to institutions with substantial library budgets. The company's commitment to open access has been a cornerstone of its identity, providing a vital service to the academic community by championing the unrestricted dissemination of scholarly research.

Over the years, Hindawi grew to become one of the world's largest open access publishers, offering a portfolio of over 200 peer-reviewed journals across a wide range of scientific, technical, and medical disciplines. The company's innovative, fully digital publishing process was designed to be user-friendly and efficient, helping researchers get their peer-reviewed discoveries out to the world faster. In 2021, Hindawi was acquired by John Wiley & Sons, a move intended to further strengthen their shared commitment to open science. However, following the acquisition, significant challenges arose related to research integrity, leading to a large number of article retractions. In response to these issues, Wiley announced in late 2023 that it would be sunsetting the Hindawi brand. The existing journals are being integrated into Wiley's broader portfolio, a step aimed at aligning publishing workflows and reinforcing rigorous quality control. While the Hindawi name will be phased out, its legacy of pioneering open access and its extensive journal collection will continue to contribute to the scholarly ecosystem under the Wiley brand, carrying forward the initial mission of broad and equitable access to knowledge.
