About Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches
What began as a heartfelt vision in 1957 has blossomed into a statewide beacon of hope for Florida's youth. It started with a small group of Florida sheriffs who recognized a pressing need for a safe haven for troubled children. With just $5,000 in hand and a grand dream in their hearts, they pooled their resources and determination to create a residential care facility. This humble beginning, rooted in the desire to offer a better path for at-risk youth, laid the groundwork for what would become the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. The early years were not without their struggles, but the unwavering commitment of the sheriffs and the growing support from communities across Florida propelled the organization forward. The initial concept of a Boys Ranch quickly proved its value, demonstrating that a structured, caring environment could indeed help turn young lives around, guiding them toward becoming responsible and productive members of society.
From that single Boys Ranch on the banks of the Suwannee River, the organization has undergone a remarkable journey of growth and transformation. In 1971, the Girls Villa was established, extending the same opportunities to young women. The evolution continued, and in 1977, the various programs were unified under a single entity, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Fund, which was later renamed the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, Inc. in 1986. Today, this nationally recognized and accredited organization operates multiple residential campuses and summer camps throughout the state. It has expanded its services far beyond its original scope, now offering a comprehensive network of support that includes residential care, camping programs, and community-based services. For over six decades, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has remained dedicated to its founding mission: to prevent juvenile delinquency and develop lawful, resilient, and productive citizens. The legacy of that small group of sheriffs lives on, having positively impacted the lives of more than 186,000 children and families across Florida, providing them with a sense of direction, ability, and hope for the future.
