Global Health Intern - QI

FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international development sector. Under close supervision, an intern will perform entry level professional duties which will provide the opportunity for professional training in various functional areas throughout the organization. Internship assignments will serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.

The intern will work in the NTDs Department, specifically the USAID’s Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) | West Program (“Act | West”) – a USAID-funded program to support the elimination of NTDs in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. The project seeks to build upon the achievements of USAID’s previous NTD investments (2010–2019) in West Africa in their efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) and trachoma as a public health problem, and the elimination of onchocerciasis (OV) in selected countries. It aims to make NTD programs capable of sustaining treatment for long-term control programs for schistosomiasis (SCH), soil transmitted helminthes (STH) and OV, and mainstream NTD programs into the national health system.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: Summer 2024 Semester: May – August

Hours: 20 – 30 hours per week

Pay Rate: $23.00-$25.00/hour (master’s student or graduate)

Location: Remote, United States (strong preference given to candidates residing in the Eastern time zone)

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

• NTDs and NGO project management through:
  • Discussions with Act | West technical and program staff
  • Participation in weekly technical meetings, biweekly Act | West team meetings, IR2 monthly meetings, program update meetings, etc.
• Practical experience with a large, global non-profit organization
• Shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with successful technical, and/or program management professionals
• Experience working with an inter-disciplinary team addressing global development challenges

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:

• Collect all the DQAs conducted by countries supported by Act | West from 2019.
• Review the DQA reports and categorize the findings/recommendations in more comprehensive manner.
• Determine if the NTDP have followed up with the recommendations and the extent to which the recommendations have been carried out.
• Gather the supervisor coverage tools (SCT) carried out and the main findings.
• Review the SCT reports and verify the extent of follow-ups on the findings.
• Peruse through country workplans to identify if the DQA and SCT findings have been mentioned to justify activities to carry out.
• Support a literature review on DQA and SCT on NTD or infectious disease.
• Conduct desk reviews, landscape analyses and/or secondary data analyses
• Conduct country calls/meetings as needed to clarify findings on the DQA or SCT on (e.g., assisting with calls/meetings preparation, meeting minutes, a post-meeting report).
• Write the resulting technical and epidemiological findings.
• Contribute to Contribute to project-related presentations, reports and/or manuscripts development.

Qualifications and Competencies:

Student in a Masters’ program with background/experience in epidemiology, or statistics, or global health.

• Currently enrolled in a master’s program at a college or university in a related field of study or within one year of graduation date: Global/public health, or Epidemiology
• Demonstrated interest in related subject area through studies, work experience, and/or personal travel
• Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
• Strong writing and research skills
  • Please submit a writing sample, between one to two pages
• Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner
• Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English

• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift to 5 lbs.
