A DAY IN THE LIFE

Our Staff Archeologist (Regular Part-Time) position is field based and will include fieldwork throughout the Southern and Central California regions. This is an as-needed position with a flexible schedule and based on demand. Shifts are assigned based on business demand, and hours may vary from week to week with no guaranteed minimum.

We're currently looking for candidates who live within a reasonable driving distance of the greater Los Angeles, San Bernardino, or Inyo County, CA areas.

At this time, we are not offering relocation or travel assistance.

As a key member of the team, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities, including:

  • Conducting pedestrian surveys, construction monitoring, and testing, including collection of field data, digital photography, artifact identification, GPS data collection, and mapping.

  • Coordinating with construction crews on monitoring needs and schedules.

  • Maintaining project files.

  • Maintaining knowledge of regulatory standards in environmental technical areas.

  • Interacting with customers and clients.

  • Working effectively, both independently and in a team setting.

  • Maintaining confidentiality at all times.

  • Exercising safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs.

  • Participating in the Company’s continuous improvement programs and providing support to team efforts.

  • Keeping up-to-date and current on industry trends by completing formal training, reviewing professional publications, and attending professional workshops.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • At least two (2) years of experience in California with a range of field tasks, including archaeological survey, construction monitoring, and site recording.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline.

  • Completion of an archaeological field school or equivalent experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform survey and monitoring projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to work well with others as part of a team.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with construction crews.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and Excel and ability to use related computer systems and software.

  • Experience with GPS equipment and Field Maps, Survey 123, or a similar software program is required.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and own transportation, with travel often required off of paved roads.

  • Familiarity with cultural resource law and regulations is preferred.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to present to supervisors.

  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to travel as needed throughout Southern and Central California, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
