About the Role

We are hiring a Backend Engineer to help build the secure and scalable digital core of ADAPT the platform transforming how the energy sector collaborates and transacts. The role focuses on designing backend systems that seamlessly connect buyers and suppliers across the supply chain, from urgent equipment breakdowns to complex planned turnarounds.

You will engineer the systems that ensure real-time visibility, process automation, and intelligent orchestration of supply and demand, helping energy companies achieve operational excellence at industrial scale.

Key Responsibilities

Core Development

• Design and implement RESTful APIs to enable real-time communication between buyers and suppliers, supporting both planned and urgent procurement needs.
• Architect scalable solutions using microservices to ensure high availability and performance for live procurement boards, supplier sourcing, and real-time inventory visibility.
• Design and optimise databases for complex supply-chain data, including supplier qualifications, inventory tracking, and performance metrics.
• Implement robust security controls, including authentication and authorisation via OAuth 2.0 with Azure Active Directory, ensuring secure access across multiple user groups.

Technical Excellence

• Troubleshoot and resolve performance bottlenecks in mission-critical systems supporting industrial operations.
• Develop solutions that scale from routine maintenance to large turnaround events, supporting dynamic and real-time operations.
• Build live control-room capabilities, automated data capture, and performance dashboards.
• Leverage serverless architectures to deliver cost-effective scalability.
• Maintain version control (Git) and collaborate effectively within distributed global teams.

Continuous Improvement

• Ensure code maintainability through clear documentation, rigorous reviews, and adherence to standards for safety-critical systems.
• Implement monitoring and logging solutions for proactive issue detection and resolution.
• Stay current with emerging backend and cloud technologies while understanding the constraints of industrial supply-chain environments.

Required Qualifications

Technical Skills

• Minimum five years of professional experience in backend development post-graduation.
• Strong proficiency in designing and implementing microservices architectures for complex, multi-stakeholder platforms.
• Extensive experience with SQL and NoSQL database systems, including optimisation for high-volume transactional data.
• Proven expertise implementing authentication and authorisation mechanisms, particularly OAuth 2.0 with Azure AD.
• Solid understanding of serverless computing architectures suitable for variable-demand operations.
• Proficiency with Git and modern version-control workflows.
• Technology-agnostic mindset with strong conceptual understanding across multiple stacks.
• Experience building secure, scalable backend systems supporting real-time operations.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API design principles, especially in B2B procurement or supply-chain contexts.

Industry and Domain Knowledge

• Oil and gas industry experience preferred but not required; willingness to learn MRO supply-chain complexities.
• Understanding of procurement processes, supplier qualification systems, and real-time operational data environments.

Soft Skills

• Strong problem-solving and communication skills, collaborating effectively with diverse technical and business stakeholders.
• Excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities critical to supporting time-sensitive operations.
• Ability to translate complex operational requirements into clear, implementable technical solutions.
• Commitment to clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
• Team-oriented with the ability to work independently where required.
• Willingness to travel for client implementations and operational support.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) supporting global-scale operations.
• Knowledge of containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for continuous deployment.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and message-queuing systems for real-time notifications.
• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools for 24/7 operational systems.
• Experience with supply-chain or industrial software platforms.
• Contributions to open-source projects and experience with high-availability systems supporting critical infrastructure.
