Digital Diagnostics began its journey in 2010, initially founded as IDx Technologies by Dr. Michael Abramoff, a visionary ophthalmologist, neuroscientist, and computer engineer. Dr. Abramoff's firsthand experience as a retina specialist, witnessing patients suffer preventable vision loss due to undiagnosed diabetic retinopathy, fueled his mission. He recognized a critical gap in diabetic eye exams and envisioned a future where autonomous AI could bridge this divide, making diagnostics more accessible and timely. This led to the development of IDx-DR, the company's flagship product and the first-ever FDA-cleared autonomous AI diagnostic system. This groundbreaking technology could diagnose diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema at the point-of-care, without requiring a physician to interpret the images, a significant step towards democratizing healthcare.

The company's evolution continued, marked by a rebrand to Digital Diagnostics to reflect its broadening scope beyond eye diseases. John Bertrand, with his extensive background in healthcare technology at Epic Systems and experience in venture capital focusing on AI, joined forces with Dr. Abramoff. Seth Rainford also became a key part of the leadership. Their collective vision was to expand the autonomous AI platform to diagnose a multitude of diseases, thereby closing more care gaps across various medical specialties. This ambition was underscored by strategic moves, including the acquisition of 3Derm Systems in 2020, which expanded their capabilities into teledermatology. Digital Diagnostics has consistently focused on building its technology on a strong ethical foundation, ensuring that its AI systems are safe, effective, and equitable.
