Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Program Overview

Leveraging deep expertise in strengthening healthcare systems, CHAI has launched an ambitious Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative that responsibly harnesses AI to radically enhance health delivery, improve patient and provider experiences, and achieve significant cost and efficiency gains in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). AI promises a significant leap in diagnostics, treatment optimization, patient engagement, and health systems efficiency. CHAI's AI initiative seeks to systematically capture and scale these benefits, delivering meaningful, sustainable health impacts at scale.

CHAI is seeking an Associate Director to lead its Clinical AI portfolio, with a focus on bringing AI-powered Clinical Decision Support (CDS) tools to CHAI partner countries in a thoughtful and responsible manner. Reporting to the Senior Director, AI, the Associate Director will play a central role in translating between the needs and constraints of LMIC Ministries of Health and leading AI labs, technology companies, and other partner organizations. This role requires both deep engagement on technical and clinical questions and strong relationship management across a diverse set of stakeholders.

The Associate Director will be responsible for identifying high-impact opportunities for clinical AI, forging partnerships with technology developers, and supporting governments to adopt and scale CDS tools that improve health outcomes. The individual will build and lead a small team focused on clinical AI, including at least one Senior Associate, and contribute to CHAI's broader AI strategy and learning agenda. This is a unique opportunity to shape how AI transforms clinical care in resource-limited settings—working at the intersection of technology, health systems, and policy.

We are seeking a candidate who combines topic expertise—spanning clinical practice, AI capabilities, and technology product development—with a strong generalist profile and demonstrated leadership ability. The ideal candidate is motivated by the opportunity to use technology to drive exceptional social impact in health at scale. The role requires periods of intensive travel (50%+ during critical project phases), with overall travel averaging 10-25% annually.

This position is flexible to being based in the United States or in a CHAI program country (subject to country leadership approval and ability to obtain work authorization). This position can be levelled at Associate Director or Director depending on level of experience

  • Build and manage a small team focused on clinical AI, providing mentorship, setting direction, and ensuring high-quality execution
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with AI labs, technology companies, academic institutions, and other organizations working on clinical AI tools relevant to LMIC settings
  • Serve as a key translator between LMIC Ministry of Health partners and technology organizations, ensuring that clinical AI tools are adapted to local clinical workflows, infrastructure constraints, and health system priorities
  • Work closely with CHAI country teams and government counterparts to design, implement, and scale clinical AI pilots, ensuring strong government ownership and sustainability
  • Provide clinical and technical guidance on AI tool selection, validation, and deployment, drawing on expertise in clinical practice, AI capabilities, and product development
  • Contribute to CHAI's broader AI strategy and learning agenda, including developing frameworks for responsible AI deployment in clinical settings
  • Represent CHAI externally on clinical AI topics, including at conferences, in donor meetings, and with global health partners
  • Support fundraising efforts for clinical AI work, including contributing to proposal development, donor engagement, and reporting
  • Travel internationally during intensive project periods (50%+), with overall travel averaging 10-25% annually
  • Undertake other responsibilities as needed at the request of the Senior Director, AI or senior leadership

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least 10 years of relevant professional experience
  • Entrepreneurial mindset motivated by ambitious goal to bring improved clinical care to 1 billion plus people enabled by AI
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI and strong familiarity with clinical decision support systems, machine learning in healthcare, and the current landscape of clinical AI tools

  • Strong technical translation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively between clinical, technical, and policy audiences

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with senior stakeholders across government, technology, and global health sectors
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort navigating ambiguity and driving initiatives with limited structure
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally, including intensive periods (50%+) during project launches, averaging 10-25% overall

  • Clinical training (e.g., MD, RN, or other clinical degree) or experience in clinical settings such as research or at clinical health tech company strongly preferred
  • Experience working with governments, multilateral organizations, and/or in LMIC health settings
