This position is responsible for leading R&D functions, including software development and test teams. It ensures efficient and effective technical development, including maintaining our current and legacy platforms and expanding our product offerings and feature set, integrating the offering with the other product lines and common services of ERT where appropriate. It ensures the timely development of high-quality, well architected software in line with SOPs. The position manages local and remote teams in multiple global locations and is solely responsible for the R&D budgets for each Product Line.

The Director, R&D Software Engineering, leads the modernization and innovation of Clario’s software platforms that power our Digital Physiology solutions supporting cardiac and respiratory clinical trials. This role combines technical depth, strategic vision, and organizational leadership to advance Clario’s mission of transforming patients’ lives through technology-enabled clinical research. The Director will oversee multiple teams responsible for platform architecture, software development, and quality improvement, driving a culture of innovation, automation, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead the modernization of Clario’s clinical trial software platform, advancing front-end and back-end systems built on .NET, AWS, and Java integrating with medical device endpoints and modern mobile applications
  • Define and execute R&D’s technical strategy in partnership with executive leadership to enhance speed, reliability, and scalability.
  • Oversee multiple development teams (2 direct reports and ~40–50 indirect, including contractors) focused on platform transformation, automation, and QA maturity.
  • Drive adoption of DevOps, CI/CD, and test automation practices to ensure quality, maintainability, and faster delivery.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Quality Assurance, and Clinical Systems to align development efforts with customer and business priorities.
  • Foster a high-performing engineering culture that values innovation, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Provide strong architectural oversight, ensuring scalable and secure systems that meet Clario’s global operational needs.
  • Mentor and develop technical leaders, ensuring continuous learning, skill development, and organizational alignment.
  • Champion global cultural transformation—bridging experienced team members with new talent and promoting shared ownership of modernization initiatives.
  • Participate in senior management discussions to shape corporate engineering strategy and ensure alignment with Clario’s long-term business goals.

What We Look For

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of technical experience, including software engineering leadership.
  • Proven track record managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams in global environments.
  • Strong background in full-stack development, cross-platform development, cloud architecture (AWS preferred).
  • Demonstrated success leading platform modernization and automation initiatives.
  • Skilled in agile methodologies and driving continuous improvement across engineering processes.
  • Experience in technology-driven or clinical software environments preferred; exclude backgrounds primarily in banking, finance, or insurance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to drive organizational change.
