About Caritas Nepal

Caritas Nepal is a non-profit organization solely devoted to the service of the poor, most disadvantaged, and marginalized people irrespective of caste, creed, ethnicity, and nationality. The organization was founded in 1990 by the Catholic Church to respond to the devastating floods and other natural disasters that occurred. As the social arm of the Catholic Church in Nepal, Caritas Nepal aims to apply animation and sector-specific participatory approaches to empower the poor, women, marginalised, and disadvantaged people to reduce poverty, secure humanitarian assistance to refugees and in times of emergency and conflict, and realise social justice and peace. Caritas Nepal's mission is to build resilient communities capable of leading their own development by empowering the marginalized, disadvantaged and vulnerable communities. Their vision is a peaceful, equitable and just society, where there is solidarity among people, respect for human dignity, and care for mother earth.

With this vision, Caritas Nepal works on the sectors of social justice and community development, disaster risk management, sustainable livelihoods, migrants, refugee and anti-trafficking, emergency and recovery supports as well as advocacy on social concerns. The organization began as a 3-member team and has grown to operate in 50 of the 75 districts in Nepal. In 2024, the organisation operated in 23 districts, supporting more than 40,000 people. One of the main intervention areas of Caritas Nepal is to promote sustainable agriculture to enable small farmer households to realise food security and sustainable livelihoods. They also focus on preparedness and emergency relief in a country prone to natural disasters. Caritas Nepal is a member of both Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Asia. The organization is registered as a Non-Governmental Organization under Nepal's District Administration Office, Lalitpur, and is affiliated with Nepal's Social Welfare Council.
