We are more than 36,000 people, in over 70 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world’s most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role Description:

Arcadis’ Water Management Practice is seeking a Water Quality Numerical Modeler Intern to join our Coastal Resilience team.

This role sits within our global business area of Resilience. Around the world, we are feeling the effects of climate change, rapid urbanization, and loss of biodiversity. The rate at which we are seeing large-scale, unforeseen events such as floods and wildfires, is becoming more frequent. We are here to steward and safeguard our natural environment and water resources while supporting and powering our world for the benefit of current and future generations.

Role Accountabilities:

In this role, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, project managers, planners, and environmental scientists, to deliver innovative solutions for coastal resilience projects. You will also conduct vulnerability assessments and develop adaptation strategies for coastal regions. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Developing, calibrating, validating, and applying ADCIRC and Delft3D models for coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and water quality analysis.
  • Analyzing and interpreting model results to support coastal resilience projects, such as flood mitigation, shoreline stabilization, and habitat restoration.
  • Integrating modeling results with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other data visualization tools to produce comprehensive reports and presentations.
  • Communicating findings to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies effectively through written reports and presentations.
  • Staying up to date with the latest advancements and best practices in coastal modeling and resilience planning.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members as needed.

Depending on project staffing needs, travel of up to 25% may be required for project site visits, client meetings, planning activities, or overseeing construction.

Key Skills & Experience:

To excel in this role, you should have experience and expertise in using tools such as ADCIRC and other software for coastal modeling and resilience planning. Proficiency in Delft3D for hydrodynamic and sediment transport modeling is essential, along with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the capability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Project management experience, particularly in managing small to medium-sized projects, is highly desirable.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a graduate degree in Coastal Engineering, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 2 years of professional experience in coastal resilience modeling and analysis.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Coastal Engineering, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with modeling software and tools (such as SWAN, XBeach, ADCIRC)
  • Professional accreditation, such as Professional Engineer (PE) or Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
