The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology was formed in March 2011 through the strategic merger of three esteemed NCI-sponsored cooperative groups: the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG). This unification was a direct response to the Institute of Medicine's call to streamline and strengthen cancer clinical trial operations, creating a more powerful and efficient entity to combat cancer. The Alliance's research portfolio is extensive, covering a broad spectrum of cancers including breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, neuro-oncology, and respiratory cancers, as well as experimental therapeutics for rare cancers. By uniting nearly 10,000 cancer specialists from hospitals, medical centers, and community clinics throughout the United States and Canada, the Alliance leverages a vast network of expertise to accelerate the pace of discovery and bring new hope to patients.
