In 2001, five visionary entrepreneurs led by Tony Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun took over a struggling Malaysian airline with a revolutionary insight: air travel in Southeast Asia was broken. Traditional carriers had built their business models around serving business travelers and wealthy tourists, leaving the vast majority of the region's population priced out of flying. The founders saw an opportunity to democratize aviation - to prove that low cost didn't have to mean low quality, and that efficiency could be passed directly to consumers in the form of affordable fares.

From that humble beginning with just two aircraft, AirAsia has transformed into ASEAN's largest low-cost carrier, serving over 800 million guests across more than 130 destinations throughout Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. The company stayed true to its purpose and tagline "Now Everyone Can Fly," revolutionizing not just an airline but an entire industry. Today, operating more than 200 aircraft, AirAsia has evolved beyond aviation into a comprehensive travel ecosystem including AirAsia MOVE (their digital travel platform), logistics through Teleport, fintech with BigPay, and duty-free retail. The company continues to innovate with sustainability initiatives including a net zero target by 2050, having avoided 130,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2023 alone through efficiency measures that also saved US$40 million in fuel costs.
