About the Active Minds Internship Program
Active Minds is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization changing the culture around mental health. Through our presence at more than 800 high school and college campuses, in corporate settings, and with a wide-reaching public audience, Active Minds is creating communities of support and saving lives. Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon after the tragic suicide of her brother Brian, Active Minds is dedicated to supporting a new generation in ending the silence, helping to make mental health as highly valued as physical health. Through our many programs – including the emotionally gripping Send Silence Packing® traveling exhibit and our compelling Active Minds Speakers – we are changing culture and behaviors related to mental health across the country.

Our internships are geared towards current college students and recent college graduates. As a small nonprofit, Active Minds relies on the help of our interns tremendously. They work directly on important initiatives and projects and assist staff on a variety of administrative tasks. Interns have the opportunity to do substantive work, gain experience in the nonprofit sector, and help change the culture around mental health.

All Spring 2026 internships will be remote, with an anticipated start date ofJanuary 26th, 2026, and an anticipated end date of April 10th, 2026. We expect interns to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, set a consistent work schedule between 9:00am and 5:00pm EST Monday through Friday, and commit to staying on board for the entire semester.

Active Minds pays interns a stipend of $1,250 per month for all U.S. based college students/grads. International students are subject to a withholding but will earn an adjusted monthly stipend as well.

Development Internship

As part of the Development team, interns will learn about the vitally important work of supporting a nonprofit’s mission by inspiring donors. Development interns will get an up-close look at how Active Minds financially supports a network of 800 campuses, workplaces, and communities with Active Minds programs all across the country by raising essential and necessary funds.

Interns with the Development team may fall under one of four general categories/roles, depending on the team's needs: Individual Giving, Development Operations, Community Fundraising, or Corporate & Foundation Relations.

All interns with the Development team will strengthen their communication skills as they develop messages that motivate people to give to Active Minds and their people skills as they interact with donors, fundraisers, and advocates passionate about our work. Some projects that interns contribute to include: outreach to donors, students, and partners (All); planning special events (Community Fundraising); data entry and hygiene (Development Operations); fundraising campaign prep (Individual Giving); donor prospect research (Individual Giving and Development Operations); corporate partners and foundation prospecting and drafting proposals (Corporate & Foundation Relations); and content creation for newsletters, donor letters, and fundraising pages (All).

All Active Minds interns will also have the opportunity to collaborate on projects with other teams and are encouraged to connect with staff across the organization to learn more about their work. Development interns will directly impact the success of nationwide fundraising initiatives that support the entire organization.

Active Minds is the United States' leading nonprofit organization committed to transforming the landscape of mental health for young adults. Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon, following the tragic loss of her brother to suicide, the organization was born from a desire to eradicate the silence and stigma surrounding mental health issues. Malmon, then a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, recognized a critical need for open dialogue and peer-to-peer support on college campuses. What began as a student group has since evolved into a national movement, dedicated to creating communities of support and saving lives. The core of Active Minds' mission is to empower young adults to change the conversation about mental health, making it as valued and discussed as physical health. By mobilizing students and young adults, the organization fosters a culture of acceptance and encourages help-seeking behavior before a crisis point is reached.

The organization's impact is driven through a multi-faceted approach that includes a vast network of chapters in high schools, colleges, and communities across the country. These student-led chapters are at the forefront of changing campus culture through awareness campaigns, educational events, and advocacy initiatives. Active Minds provides these chapters with the resources, training, and support needed to be effective mental health advocates. Beyond its chapter network, Active Minds implements a variety of acclaimed national programs. 'Send Silence Packing' is a powerful traveling exhibit that displays backpacks to represent the number of college students who die by suicide each year, sparking conversations and raising awareness. The Active Minds Speakers bureau features a diverse group of presenters who share their personal stories with mental health, providing relatable and educational content to audiences nationwide. Furthermore, initiatives like Active Minds @Work extend the conversation into the workplace, promoting mental health-friendly environments for the next generation of the workforce. Through these comprehensive efforts, Active Minds is not only supporting young adults but is also building a lasting movement of champions for mental health.
