Zack Hudgins
@zackhudgins
Junior software engineer focused on building reliable tooling, backend infrastructure, and customer-facing features.
What I'm looking for
I’m a junior software engineer who enjoys turning complex workflows into dependable systems—especially when that means eliminating manual effort and making other engineers faster.
At Applied Research Associates, I built an automated legacy-database migration tool that reduced days of manual recreation to minutes, including discrepancy logging for review. I also authored and implemented infrastructure to represent a material-assignment library’s state as native database objects, removing years of state-sync workarounds and enabling standard database operations.
I partner with stakeholders and drive decisions through clear technical communication. I authored a solo technical proposal comparing bulk-editing approaches, presented it to cross-team leads and PMs, and helped move one option into implementation; I also wrote customer-facing reports explaining how calculation methodologies map to standalone source behavior.
From internships and projects, I’ve built across the stack and tested my work like a product: adding IoT sensor support at Alarm.com with backend API/schema updates and integration tests, contributing to migration automation at Loftware for 100+ customer transitions, and evaluating LLM outputs in an AI model evaluation contract. I also designed and built a Spanish learning web app using spaced repetition, with AI-generated examples to address common flashcard failure modes.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Built an automated legacy-database migration tool and developed infrastructure to represent a material-assignment library’s state as native database objects, enabling standard database operations. Authored technical proposals and customer-facing reports, implemented a shader-based scale-reference overlay with OpenSceneGraph, and served as Scrum Master to keep cross-team reviews moving.
Extended the backend database schema and API to support a new WiFi motion-detection sensor and display real-time motion-state data in the customer-facing web app. Wrote integration tests to validate sensor integration and catch a database-update regression before release.
Worked as a quality assurance intern at Loftware supporting label design and automation efforts.
Supported label design and automation initiatives as a software engineering intern, including building automation scripts related to migrating customer data from a legacy desktop app to a modern SaaS web application.
