Edward Welker

I am a senior software engineer with 15+ years building and optimizing massive-scale cloud platforms and backend systems. I bring deep hands-on expertise in Python/Django, observability, and data engineering for environments handling millions of daily requests.

At NCBI I led efforts in Observability, FinOps, and Internal Developer Platforms, building a centralized IDP that aggregated data from 47 sources into a unified SQL warehouse and automated tracking across 5,000+ CI/CD configurations. I also implemented and managed a comprehensive observability stack and reduced infrastructure costs through high-cardinality optimizations.

I have driven cloud migrations, modernized stacks, and served as a technical lead for large engineering groups, establishing CI/CD and GitOps standards, designing hiring processes, and mentoring hundreds of developers. My work includes migrating legacy systems to Python/Django and launching high-scale, mobile-optimized architectures for PubMed.

I am passionate about reliability, automation, and developer experience, and I institutionalize practices like RFCs, post-mortems, and standardized curricula to raise organizational technical maturity. I actively contribute to the community through teaching, meetups, and technical reviews.
