Role Overview
We are seeking a Wildlife Forensic Genetics Specialist to join our dedicated team focused on the preservation of wildlife through advanced genetic analysis. In this critical role, you will leverage your expertise in molecular biology and genetics to support investigations related to wildlife crime, enhance conservation efforts, and contribute to scientific research that informs policy and regulatory frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Conduct DNA analysis on biological samples collected from wildlife crime scenes to identify species and individual animals involved
- Develop and validate genetic markers specific to target species to improve forensic analysis capabilities
- Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, NGOs, and conservation groups to provide scientific expertise and technical support in investigations
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations to communicate findings to stakeholders, including legal authorities and conservation organizations
- Participate in fieldwork, including sample collection and environmental assessments, to enhance data quality and integrity
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in forensic genetics and wildlife conservation methodologies
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree or PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Wildlife Biology, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in forensic genetics or a related field, with a focus on wildlife applications
- Proven experience with DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing techniques
- Strong understanding of wildlife conservation issues and relevant legislation
Preferred:
- Experience working with endangered species and knowledge of international wildlife trafficking laws
- Published research in peer-reviewed journals related to genetics or conservation
- Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and software for data analysis
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in molecular techniques such as PCR, STR analysis, and next-generation sequencing
- Familiarity with software tools for genetic data analysis, including R, Python, or similar
- Experience with laboratory quality management systems and standards
