Role Overview
The Assistant Warning Coordination Meteorologist will play a critical role in our meteorological team, working closely with the Warning Coordination Meteorologist to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts and warnings. This position involves direct engagement with local emergency management agencies, media, and the public to disseminate vital weather information and enhance community preparedness for severe weather events.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the coordination of weather warnings and forecasts, ensuring timely and accurate dissemination to stakeholders.
- Engage with emergency management officials, local broadcasters, and community leaders to build relationships and enhance communication regarding severe weather events.
- Utilize advanced meteorological modeling tools and data analysis techniques to support decision-making processes.
- Participate in the development and implementation of outreach programs to educate the public on weather safety and preparedness.
- Conduct thorough post-event analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of warning strategies and identify areas for improvement.
- Stay informed on advancements in meteorological science and technology to continuously enhance forecasting techniques.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in operational meteorology, including severe weather forecasting.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex meteorological concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in Meteorology or related field.
- Experience working directly with emergency management agencies or in public communication roles.
- Knowledge of GIS tools and applications in meteorology.
- Familiarity with radar, satellite, and numerical weather prediction models.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficiency in meteorological software tools such as AWIPS, GRAnalyst, or equivalent.
- Experience with data analysis tools, including Python, R, or MATLAB.
- Strong understanding of weather radar systems and satellite observations.
