Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Curator of Lepidoptera to join our research team, dedicated to the study and conservation of butterflies and moths. In this fully remote position, you will lead efforts to expand and maintain our Lepidoptera collection, drive research initiatives, and engage with the public to promote awareness of these vital insects.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the curation of our Lepidoptera collection, ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and preservation of specimens
- Conduct research on Lepidoptera taxonomy, ecology, and conservation, contributing to scientific publications and presentations
- Develop and implement outreach programs to educate the public about Lepidoptera and their ecological importance
- Collaborate with other researchers and organizations on Lepidoptera-related projects, fostering partnerships for conservation efforts
- Manage and mentor interns and volunteers involved in Lepidoptera research and curation
- Stay current with advancements in Lepidoptera research and conservation practices
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- Ph.D. in entomology, ecology, or a related field with a focus on Lepidoptera
- Demonstrated experience in curating biological collections and managing specimen databases
- Strong publication record in Lepidoptera research or related areas
- Proficiency in identifying North American Lepidoptera species
Preferred:
- Experience with molecular techniques and their application in Lepidoptera research
- Familiarity with community outreach and public engagement strategies
- Ability to work collaboratively in diverse teams and across various disciplines
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in entomological taxonomy and biodiversity assessment
- Experience with specimen management software and databases
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and statistical software relevant to ecological research
Soft Skills and Cultural Fit
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey scientific concepts to a general audience
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing research projects
