Communications Director Job Description

Position: Communications Director

Location: Fully Remote (Some travel)

Reports to: Co-Director

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Compensation: $114,500

About BLMP

The Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP) envisions a world where no one is forced to give up their homeland and where all Black LGBTQIA+ people are free and liberated. We build and center the power of Black LGBTQIA+ migrants to ensure the liberation of all Black people through Organizing & Basebuilding, Strategic Communications, and Viability & Sustainability. We are led by a directly impacted steering committee, staff and consultants, and operate organizing networks in New York City, DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia region), Minneapolis, California, and the South. We build power, community, and knowledge in the U.S., while challenging the role that the U.S. plays globally in creating the conditions that force us to leave our homes.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Co-Director, the Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all communications, including digital, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate BLMP’s mission. The Director of Communications will ensure that BLMP is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within this diverse network and constituent base. The Director of Communications will lead the communications team, in collaboration with other staff members as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Supervise members of the Communications Team and lead department meetings.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive communications plans across the organization's diverse audiences in collaboration with BLMP’s staff team, consultants, members, and partner organizations.
  • Content & Narrative Strategy: Work closely with the Communications Strategist and Digital Organizer to lead the content strategy that engages audience segments, and build/implement narrative strategy in service of Black liberation, Black migrant justice, and abolition of the carceral state.
  • Digital & Web Presence: Mentor and lead the communications team through website administration, coordinating with the Communications Strategist to ensure new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) are posted regularly.
  • Collateral Management: Manage development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual reports, and website.
  • Brand & Media Relations: Strengthen BLMP brand and visual identity, create/manage media contact lists, and oversee departmental budget.
  • Rapid Response: Develop rapid response and crisis communication protocols.
  • Movement Building: Represent BLMP in communications-specific movement spaces/coalitions, infusing BLMP’s narrative strategy into the larger movement-wide narrative strategy.

Qualifications

  • Experience: At least 10 years of communications experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a nonprofit structure, covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and donor communications.
  • Strategy to Execution: Proven ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels.
  • Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to build and incorporate organizational voice across platforms, organize/clearly share information, and stay up to date with ever-changing tools and best practices.
  • Leadership Style: Highly collaborative, mission-aligned relationship builder who welcomes and integrates feedback; a self-starter comfortable with a participatory leadership style.
  • Organization: Highly organized with the ability to manage a variety of deadline-driven initiatives concurrently.
  • Availability: Available to work nights and weekends during moments of urgent response.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passionate about Black liberation, Black migrant justice, and abolition of the carceral state.
  • Committed to centering and building the leadership of Black migrants and 1st generation Black people who identify as TGNCI, women, femmes, and/or who are living with disabilities.
  • Bilingual.
