What began in 1972 as a compassionate response from a group of dedicated volunteers has blossomed into one of the largest and most respected not-for-profit providers of care, support, and housing across Sussex. The story of Southdown is one of community, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in people's lives. In the early days, as long-stay hospital institutions were closing, our founders recognized a critical need. People with mental health challenges were being resettled in Brighton and Hove, but they lacked the stable housing and tailored support necessary to truly thrive in the community. With a vision to fill this gap, the founders fundraised to purchase their first property in Brighton, laying the groundwork for an organization that would touch thousands of lives.

For over fifteen years, Southdown operated as a small, volunteer-run organization, deeply rooted in the Brighton & Hove area. The turning point came in 1989 when the first paid staff were hired, marking the beginning of a significant expansion. The organization's reach extended across Sussex, and its services broadened to include support for people with learning disabilities. In 1996, a name change to Southdown Housing Association reflected its growing role in providing not just support, but also high-quality housing. Today, Southdown stands as a major voluntary sector employer in Sussex, with over 1,000 employees. Annually, we support over 11,000 people through more than 60 diverse services, spanning from the coastal towns of Chichester and Hastings to inland areas like Crawley and Lewes. Our journey from a small group of volunteers to a leading regional provider is a testament to the enduring power of a clear and compassionate mission: to support people in living well and independently within their communities.
