With a history stretching back over 145 years, we were founded by Gisaburo Shiono, Sr. in 1878 in Doshomachi, Osaka, the very place our headquarters remains today. From our beginnings as a drug wholesaler, we have grown into a major, research-driven pharmaceutical company, driven by a profound dedication to patient care. Our core policy, established from our earliest days, is to 'supply the best possible medicine to protect the health and wellbeing of the patients we serve.' This principle is the bedrock of our mission and guides every aspect of our work. We are committed to delivering pharmaceuticals that provide the highest level of satisfaction to patients, their families, and healthcare providers, ultimately improving quality of life for people across the globe. Our journey has been marked by significant milestones, from developing our first proprietary antibiotic, Shinomin, to launching Crestor, a hyperlipidemia treatment that became a global blockbuster.

Our focus is sharply aimed at addressing some of the world's most pressing health challenges. We concentrate our research and development efforts on key therapeutic areas, including infectious diseases, pain and central nervous system (CNS) disorders, and metabolic diseases. For over 60 years, we have been at the forefront of developing innovative anti-infectives, contributing vital treatments for HIV and influenza. We are passionately committed to tackling the global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To achieve our goals, we believe in the power of collaboration. We actively build partnerships with leading academic institutions, other pharmaceutical companies, and early-stage biotech firms. These collaborations are essential to advancing science with the urgency that today’s global health crises demand. Through a combination of our dedicated in-house discovery efforts and these strategic alliances, we continue to deliver groundbreaking firsts for patients in Japan and around the world, striving to build a future where everyone can lead a healthier, more prosperous life.
