Job Description:

Temporary Associate, Carbon Credits – Third Derivative

Third Derivative Overview:

Third Derivative is in need of temporary support for our First Gigaton Captured Team. Founded by RMI and New Energy Nexus, Third Derivative (“D3”) is Rocky Mountain Institute’s climate technology innovation engine, accelerating the rate of climate innovation through our inclusive ecosystem approach, which rapidly finds, funds, and scales promising climate tech solutions globally, with a particular focus on hard to abate sectors and a focus on staying ahead of emissions globally.

By uniting and aligning committed investors, large corporates, and market and policy experts with the world’s most promising climate tech startups, D3 bridges finance and resource gaps to increase speed to market. Our flexible and highly curated accelerator program enables startups to focus on their unique needs and opportunities.

Since founding in 2020, today D3’s collaborative ecosystem has grown to include corporate partners with a combined $4T in market capitalization, VC funds and equity investors with a combined total of >$7B AUM (across five continents), and a network of >150 mentors with deep functional and sector expertise. Since 2020, D3 has supported nearly 200 startups addressing climate challenges across all major emissions sectors. Together, we are moving markets to achieve a brighter, more equitable climate future.

Now, our high-performance team of climate enthusiasts is growing, and we’re seeking a Temporary Associate to join our team for a five month project.

Position Overview:

Carbon removal will play a necessary role in helping us achieve our global climate goals. To scale and support the required carbon removal market, we need to increase demand for carbon credits. Buying carbon credits can be a challenging and time-consuming process for many companies. The diligence process for a project developer’s approach can be technically complicated to develop and execute. As such, we are hiring a temporary team member to help us investigate and educate others about the carbon purchasing process.

You will work with multiple RMI teams, including the Carbon Markets Initiative, the CDR Initiative, Legal, Procurement and Finance to develop a perspective on the carbon credit purchasing process.

Your Responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with the Carbon Markets Initiative and CDR Initiative to learn about and design a theoretical carbon credit purchasing strategy, which could be used by other organizations
  • Developing a perspective on diligence processes for different CDR pathways with input from the CDR Initiative and external experts
  • Investigating the types of legal contracts and payments required for an organization to purchase carbon credits (incorporating input from RMI Legal, Procurement, and Finance departments)
  • Capturing findings in internal presentations and a report

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree with 2+ years of relevant work experience OR graduate degree in an applicable field such as engineering, environmental studies, finance, and/or business with a focus on energy and/or sustainability
  • Familiarity with carbon removal (including why it is a necessary part of our long-term climate strategy, basic familiarity with different carbon removal approaches, etc.)
  • Outstanding communication skills for working effectively on teams, clearly communicating results and key takeaways, and excellent writing capabilities
  • Strong data-driven decision-making and creative problem-solving skills. Comfort working with uncertainty and unfamiliar disciplines.
  • Ability to work across multiple workstreams and with a diverse range of teams at RMI
  • Strong attention to detail and effective task management

Benefits:

For temporary employees, we offer:

  • Paid time off
  • Sick leave
  • Casual work environment

Third Derivative is a great place to gain broad exposure while also building some specific areas of expertise with climate-tech innovation. This is a great place to expand from a technical or sustainability background while learning about finance and entrepreneurship or vice versa.

Location:

We are a remote-ready organization with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado; and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States.

Compensation:

$27 to $30/hour

At RMI, our mission is to build a clean, prosperous, and secure energy future for all. For this to happen, every single person needs to be a stakeholder in the energy transition. Recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and retaining a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve is critical to our success. We need the widest range of perspectives to understand the systems we are trying to change.
