Working closely with the Asia Fishery Improvement Manager, the Taiwan Fishery Improvement Coordinator is a dedicated contracted role, responsible for developing and managing Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), sustainable initiatives, and supporting implementation of improvement actions for the benefit of fisheries and fishing communities in Taiwan and the greater region. The Taiwan Fishery Improvement Coordinator will conduct outreach, and directly engage key stakeholders (e.g. commercial fishermen, local cooperatives and government) in Taiwan with the aim of developing FIPs which reflect community-based solutions. In addition, this position will be responsible for FIP work plan development and implementation; project management, providing project progress updates; holding regular stakeholder meetings; and conducting research.

We are seeking a contractor based in Taiwan, who can travel for significant amounts of time regionally, nationally, and internationally, up to 3-4 months a year. The person in this position should have a flexible, creative and empathetic outlook; possess independent and entrepreneurial qualities; and have a strong background in fishery issues, seafood businesses, and/or sustainability and environmental issues. The person should also possess the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with strong independent management and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support/maintain relationships with key local stakeholders e.g. fishing companies, cooperatives, local processors, government officials, and other community stakeholders to develop and implement improvement projects.
  • Hold stakeholder outreach and co-design meetings to facilitate development of improvement work plans which have buy-in from key supply chain participants.
  • Support implementation and manage the improvement projects in line with FIP work plans, ensuring timely delivery of project deliverables.
  • Conduct research and analysis in collaboration with the program team and science/analytic team.
  • Support communications activities and materials development related to O2’s work in Taiwan.
  • Other support responsibilities include, but not limited to, coordinating events and meetings, including, logistics; translation and interpretation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, an advanced degree in environmental and natural resource conservation, fishery science, labor rights, business, marketing, public relations, etc. is a plus
  • 1+ years of experience in relevant fields e.g. conservation, seafood business, fisheries, human rights at sea, ocean policy, etc.
  • Passionate commitment to the health of fisheries and oceans
  • Sense of humor, good human and professional interaction skills
  • Resourceful, collaborative, proactive, adaptable and creative problem solver
  • Energetic and self-directed; able to work independently and function at a high level in a virtual, cross-cultural, and international organization
  • Team player and demonstrated ability to maintain excellent internal and external relationships
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Mandarin language skills, Hokkien is a plus
  • Commitment to transparency, accountability, continuous learning, and direct, constructive communication
  • Ability to work independently and remotely using modern cloud computing tools
  • Excellent computer skills appropriate to an evolving cloud-based IT environment, including experience with Google Workplace, CRM databases, and online task management platforms such as Asana
  • Ability to travel extensively, both domestically and internationally
  • Ability to work with a geographically dispersed team across time zones
  • Capability to build and maintain professional, equity-centered, relationships with coworkers, stakeholders and clients
  • Based in Taiwan

Benefits

Compensation, Location, and Travel Expectations

Annual compensation for this dedicated contracted role will be between USD 39,000 to USD 50,000 which will be commensurate with experience. The person contracted will become a core member of O2’s virtual team. The contractor will be ‘home-based,’ meaning they will support their own work space. Currently, O2 has team members and core partners in China, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States. We aspire to bring the whole team together each year in locations around the world.
