Compensation Pay Range:
$127,920.00 - $191,880.00The actual hourly rate will equal or exceed the required minimum wage applicable to the job location. Additional compensation includes annual, quarterly performance, or premiums may be paid in amounts ranging per hour in specific circumstances. Premiums may be based on schedule, facility, season, or specific work performed. Multiple premiums may apply if applicable criteria are met.
A Senior Principal Engineer - Search will utilize expert knowledge in search technologies, distributed systems, and cloud platforms to deliver high-performing, scalable, and relevant search solutions across O’Reilly’s enterprise applications. This position will provide technical direction, participate in architectural review boards, and guide cross-functional teams in implementing advanced search capabilities. Senior Principal Engineers will serve as thought leaders, balancing innovation and precision with enterprise reliability.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides technical leadership and direction for enterprise search initiatives, ensuring scalable and reliable architecture.
- Serves as a key contributor to architectural review boards, guiding technical decisions on search platforms and integrations.
- Designs and implements search solutions with a focus on relevancy, ranking, and performance optimization.
- Leads evaluation and adoption of search technologies, including SOLR, Elasticsearch, and OpenSearch.
- Partners with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into precise, actionable technical designs.
- Ensures alignment of search architecture with broader enterprise cloud strategies on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Mentors engineering teams on search best practices, Java development, and distributed data management.
- Establishes standards for indexing, query optimization, and data pipelines to support predictive and personalized search experiences.
- Conducts deep technical reviews to ensure precision, reliability, and scalability in search-related implementations.
- Champions observability, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement in search services.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 10–15 years of software engineering experience with a strong emphasis on search systems and distributed architectures.
- Expert-level experience with SOLR and hands-on knowledge of Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.
- Strong foundation in Java development and core software engineering principles.
- Solid understanding of databases, data modeling, and large-scale indexing strategies.
- Cloud expertise with GCP (Google Kubernetes Engine, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, etc.) for deploying and scaling search solutions.
- Experience providing technical direction at the enterprise level, including architectural governance.
- Detail-oriented, precise, and analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with senior engineers, architects, and business stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience designing and scaling personalized or predictive search experiences.
- Familiarity with observability tools for search performance monitoring.
- Background in leading enterprise-wide search migrations or modernization efforts.
- Demonstrated ability to influence at both technical and executive levels.
