Key Responsibilities
- “Wrangle” data for visualizations by locating, processing, compositing, subsetting, analyzing, and formatting raw data into netCDF, shapefiles, or other common file formats.
- Pitch ideas for data visualizations about Earth and climate science.
- Produce maps, graphs, and other data visualizations from scratch, using ArcGIS, Excel, custom code, and open source tools.
- Write scripts or software to automate data ingest and visualization.
- Evaluate and recommend software and apps that allow for the integration of interactive data visualization elements into existing web infrastructure.
- Ensure that data visualization and other graphics adhere to best practices in information design and cartography.
- Develop color palettes that adhere to best practices for different types of data (categorical, linear, diverging) that adhere to best practices.
- Work with subject matter and data experts to understand appropriate use and limitations of data products, and work with writers and editors to produce accurate captions for graphs, maps, and other data visualizations.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Master’s degree in a scientific discipline plus 10 years of experience, or Bachelor’s plus 15 years experience
- Ten or more years of experience producing Earth science and climate data visualizations for high-profile NASA or NOAA websites, including NASA Earth Observatory and/or NOAA Climate.gov.
- Extremely high attention to detail.
- Deep knowledge of best practices in cartography and data visualization.
- Ability to wrangle spatial data in a variety of formats and projections.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS or analogous open-source tools, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Panoply, GProjector, plotly, DataWrapper.
- Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment with daily production deadlines.
