We founded Material Security in 2017 in response to the reality that fragmented, point solutions can't protect against the modern threats and vulnerabilities facing the cloud workspace. The most fundamental material of any company – the emails, documents, and accounts that your business is built on – lives in cloud office suites like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Our mission is to secure this critical infrastructure before, during, and after a breach with security that's always on but never in the way, enabling both productivity and peace of mind. We believe that a breach shouldn't mean it's game over. Defense-in-depth has always been a cornerstone of effective security, and we're here to bring that same principle to your email and cloud office data.

Our journey began after witnessing the high-profile email attacks during the 2016 election cycle. It became clear to us, a team of engineers from Dropbox, that while existing security could block attacks from entering inboxes, they did little to protect the vast amounts of sensitive content already residing within them. This realization sparked the creation of Material. We're not just another email security gateway; we take a platform-level approach, moving away from traditional perimeter-based solutions to a more holistic, in-depth defense strategy. We leverage the rich APIs of cloud office systems to bring visibility to insecure settings and get a handle on the data stored at-rest. We're backed by leading investors like Andreessen Horowitz and are proud to protect some of the world's most dynamic and innovative companies. Our goal is to build an enduring, independent cybersecurity company that has a real impact on securing the critical digital infrastructure that powers the modern world.
