At Koala Health, our mission is to make managing your pet’s health simple and enjoyable. We’ve built an innovative online pharmacy that delivers pet medications and supplements in presorted pouches, directly to customers’ doors. As we continue to scale, high-quality, reliable data is becoming increasingly critical to how we operate, measure success, and make decisions.
The Data Engineer will take ownership of Koala Health’s data infrastructure: designing, building, and maintaining our data pipelines, models, and analytics foundation, and evolving it into a trusted, scalable platform used across the organization. Partnering closely with product, operations, growth, finance, and leadership, you will ensure data is accurate, accessible, and actionable, transforming our existing infrastructure into a reliable internal product that balances speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.
For this role, we’re seeking a hands-on, highly competent, self-directed engineer who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building durable systems, and can operate independently without close day-to-day oversight.
This is a remote position for individuals authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

What You'll Do:

  • Own and evolve Koala Health’s end-to-end data infrastructure, including ingestion, transformation, modeling, and delivery.
  • Design and maintain reliable data pipelines from production systems (e.g., application databases, third-party tools, vendors).Build and manage data models that support analytics, reporting, and operational use cases.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for data quality, testing, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Partner with stakeholders across product, operations, finance, and marketing to understand data needs and translate them into scalable solutions.
  • Improve the reliability, performance, and cost-efficiency of the data stack as the business grows.
  • Own incident response and debugging for data issues, proactively identifying and resolving root causes.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation so data assets are understandable and usable across the company.
  • Evaluate and implement tooling improvements where it meaningfully improves developer velocity or data quality.
  • Act as a thought partner to leadership on how data can better support decision-making and operational efficiency.

What You'll Need:

  • 4+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or in a similar role with significant end-to-end ownership.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience building well-structured analytical data models.
  • Hands-on experience working with cloud data warehouses, including Snowflake.
  • Experience designing and operating ELT pipelines using managed tools such as Fivetran (or comparable ELT solutions).Familiarity with modern data platform orchestration and transformation frameworks (e.g., Mozart or similar).Experience enabling analytics and reporting workflows using Looker with an understanding of how data modeling impacts downstream usage.
  • Solid programming experience (Python) for data pipelines and transformations.
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar).Ability to independently diagnose data quality issues, identify root causes, and implement durable fixes.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, manage priorities, and deliver high-quality outcomes in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong systems thinking and an instinct for building simple, reliable solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort collaborating with non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare/pharmacy tech, veterinary or pet-health platforms, and/or high-volume eCommerce/subscription businesses with strong order, fulfillment, and operational analytics needs.
  • Experience treating data as a product with clear ownership and accountability.
We believe interviews are a two-way process: you're interviewing us just as much as we're interviewing you. We respect candidates by moving quickly and communicating clearly during the process. We want to see you at your best and will take steps within reason to make that happen.
We look forwards to meeting you!

At Koala Health, we're focused on simplifying the healthcare experience for pet parents. We understand that managing your pet's health, especially when it involves medications for chronic conditions, can be overwhelming. That's why we've built a modern, mobile-first pet pharmacy designed to make your life easier. We work directly with both pet parents and their veterinarians to streamline access to pet medications. Our goal is to save you time and provide greater peace of mind when it comes to your furry family member's well-being.

We offer a comprehensive range of medications and health-related products for dogs and cats through our online storefront, available in all 50 states. One of our key services is pre-sorting and packaging prescriptions into individual daily dosage 'Koala pouches,' clearly labeled by day and time. This makes managing even complex medication regimens a no-brainer. We also provide an auto-refill service, ensuring you never run out of your pet's essential medications. For veterinarians, we offer a fully integrated prescription solution, which helps eliminate the burden of in-house medication storage and fulfillment, allowing them to focus more on patient care. We believe that by bridging the gap between veterinarians and pet parents with cutting-edge technology, we're setting a new standard in pet medication delivery and enhancing the overall quality of care for pets everywhere. Our service is designed to be free to use; you only pay for the medications your pet needs.
