This role offers an exciting opportunity to work remotely on the modernization of enterprise mainframe environments, integrating z/OS, Linux on Z, and container-based systems within hybrid cloud infrastructures. The engineer will be responsible for system setup, performance tuning, software integration, and workload migration while ensuring operational continuity, security compliance, and high availability. This position is ideal for highly skilled mainframe professionals who enjoy solving complex technical challenges in secure, mission-critical environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement innovative solutions.
Accountabilities
As an IBM Z Systems Engineer, you will:
- Install, configure, and tune z/OS operating systems on cloud-hosted or on-premises IBM Z hardware.
- Configure LPARs, I/O subsystems, and network connectivity, defining hardware profiles and allocating resources.
- Deploy and integrate core software components for z/OS, z/Linux, and containerized platforms, including monitoring, security, and automation tools.
- Migrate and optimize existing mainframe system software and middleware to hybrid cloud environments, ensuring performance parity or improvement.
- Integrate and configure centralized control planes for authentication, resource provisioning, monitoring, and reporting.
- Conduct system validation, performance tuning, and benchmarking during deployment and ongoing operations.
- Develop and execute workload migration plans, including pre-migration testing, post-migration assessment, and disaster recovery integration.
- Provide engineering input for system design, control plane extensibility, and alignment with hybrid cloud architecture standards.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- 8+ years of mainframe systems engineering experience, with expertise in z/OS installation, JES2/JES3, VTAM/TCP-IP.
- Proven experience in LPAR and IOCP/HCD configuration, storage, and network management (e.g., DFSMS, OSA adapters).
- Track record in system software migration, sysplex configuration, and performance tuning.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code, STIG compliance, hybrid/cloud-integrated control planes, and DevSecOps pipelines.
- Active DoD Secret clearance required.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree, IAT-II certification (Security+, CySA+, CCNA, GIAC, SSCP), IBM System Z or z/OS certifications.
- Scripting experience in CLIST, REXX, or JCL automation.
- Knowledge of enterprise tools such as ServiceNow, Splunk, Tivoli, and experience with multi-tenant, cloud-integrated IBM Z environments.
