About International Development Law Organization
We are the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the only global intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law to advance peace and sustainable development. Our mission is to champion people-centered justice and help build more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies. We believe that justice is a prerequisite for peace, development, and human rights, and we work to empower people and communities to claim their rights and provide governments with the know-how to realize them. Our work spans the spectrum from peace and institution-building to economic recovery in countries emerging from conflict and striving towards democracy. We also support emerging economies and middle-income countries in strengthening their legal capacity and rule of law framework for sustainable development and economic opportunity. With experience in over 90 countries, we have a deep understanding of various legal systems and the challenges they face.
Our history began in 1983 when we were founded as a non-governmental organization, the International Development Law Institute, by a group of legal advisors. In 1988, we became an intergovernmental organization, and since 2001, we have held Observer Status at the United Nations. This unique position allows us to contribute to global policy discussions and advocate for the importance of the rule of law on the international stage. Our approach is rooted in local ownership and partnership. We work closely with governments, civil society, and legal professionals to ensure that our programs are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of the countries we serve. Our vast network of thousands of trusted experts, alumni, and partners around the world is a testament to our collaborative and inclusive approach. We are committed to transparency, accountability, and achieving measurable results that make a real difference in people's lives. We are dedicated to creating a culture of justice where every person can live with dignity and equality under the rule of law.
