Role Description

We’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build the APIs that deliver data and real‑time events to Gridware’s customers. You’ll create critical interfaces that allow utilities to access our insights and take action on hazards to the electric grid.

You’ll work hands‑on with both customer engineering teams and Gridware’s internal teams to scope, deploy, and operationalize API integrations. This includes our core Gridware API, upcoming partnerships, and new data products under development. This is a high‑ownership, high‑impact role essential to making our platform’s capabilities accessible and actionable for the people who need them the most, and protecting critical infrastructure at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build robust APIs that expose real‑time events, health metrics, and analytics to our customers.
  • Collaborate directly with utility customers and integration partners to understand their data needs and workflows.
  • Implement rate limiting, data access controls, and authentication systems.
  • Create comprehensive documentation that helps customers integrate quickly and successfully.
  • Champion engineering best practices around testing, API performance, observability, and continuous deployment to ensure reliability at scale.
  • Mentor and support the development of other engineers.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of software development experience, with a strong focus on building APIs and distributed systems.
  • A strong understanding of API design principles, event‑driven frameworks, and best practices for API security, versioning and documentation.
  • Proficiency in Python and PostgreSQL (or equivalent modern stack).
  • Excellent communicator and relationship builder; comfortable explaining technical details to both engineers and utility stakeholders.
  • Comfortable taking broad ownership in a fast‑paced, high‑autonomy environment.
  • Passion for building products that combine software, sensors, and the physical world.

Bonus Skills

  • Familiarity with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, or Mimir.
  • Background working in hardware‑software ecosystems or IoT systems.
  • Strong product sense and ability to translate complex technical concepts into usable tools.

Salary

$180,000 – $200,000 a year

At Gridware, we are at the forefront of a technological revolution, dedicated to enhancing and protecting the electrical grid, the very backbone of our modern economy. Through groundbreaking technology, we are revolutionizing how power utilities monitor, manage, and maintain their critical infrastructure. Our innovative Gridscope™ devices and advanced analytics platform provide continuous, real-time insights into grid health, 24 hours a day. This empowers utilities to move from a reactive to a proactive stance, identifying and addressing potential hazards like falling tree branches or equipment malfunctions before they escalate into costly outages or dangerous wildfires. Our system's ability to operate even when power lines are de-energized, thanks to an independent power supply and multiple communication methods including cellular, satellite, and device-to-device networking, ensures that grid operators receive timely alerts about faults and environmental stressors, regardless of location or conditions.

Gridware's core mission is to create a smarter, stronger, and more resilient electrical grid. We specialize in monitoring the physical and mechanical aspects of the grid, including external factors such as environmental and physical threats that can impact reliability. Our high-precision mechanical sensors and on-device artificial intelligence processing units detect anomalies, enabling utilities to schedule timely repairs and rapidly respond to ignitions or other climatic events. This comprehensive approach not only improves safety and reduces the frequency and duration of outages but also extends the life of existing assets in the field. By pioneering Active Grid Response technology, defined by immediate detection, precise localization, and detailed identification of issues, we are helping to eliminate the 'Hazard Awareness Delay' that has long plagued the industry. Trusted by utilities across North America serving millions of customers, Gridware is committed to preparing the grid for the future, ensuring it can meet increasing power demands and withstand the challenges of a changing climate.
