FOSS was founded in 1956 by engineer Nils Foss in Hillerød, Denmark, driven by a vision of making better use of the world's food resources. His ambition was to offer automated and cost-efficient alternatives to time-consuming analyses in the food and agriculture industry. More than six decades later, FOSS has grown to become the leading global provider of analytics for the food and agricultural industries, remaining 100% family-owned.

Today, FOSS creates end-to-end solutions that secure and improve food quality, from raw material to finished product. The company's analytical instruments and solutions help producers maximise the value of their production while making the best possible use of valuable natural resources. FOSS covers industries including Dairy, Feed and Forage, Grain, Flour Milling and Oilseed Processing, Laboratories, Meat, Raw Milk Testing, and Wine. The company employs more than 1,750 dedicated people worldwide, with many holding top-level scientific or technical backgrounds including more than 40 PhDs in areas such as photonics, chemometrics, physical chemistry, and food science. With manufacturing, research and development facilities in Denmark, China and Hungary, and sales subsidiaries in 34 countries, FOSS generates 99% of its business outside of Denmark.
