The Senior Manager of Database Systems is responsible for leading the design, engineering, and operational management of Ferguson’s database environments across on-premises, cloud, and disaster recovery infrastructures. This role oversees a team of technical engineers, ensuring database systems are highly available, secure, performant, and aligned with licensing and patching standards. In collaboration with the team, this leader ensures that database platforms are installed and configured in alignment with vendor best practices and business requirements. The Senior Manager actively monitors system performance and provides strategic recommendations for scaling, upgrades, and lifecycle management.

This role also plays a key part in developing long-term strategic roadmaps, maintaining service-level agreements (SLAs), and aligning database initiatives with broader IT and business goals. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Core Infrastructure Engineering, the Senior Manager regularly partners with senior leadership across Ferguson to define and deliver robust architectural strategies and engineering solutions.

Location: This position may be remote or hybrid in accordance with company policy. (If located within 40 miles of Headquarters in Newport News, VA, you will be considered a Hybrid employee; 3-days in office and 2-days remote.)

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy & Planning

  • Lead and mentor a team of Database Administrators and Engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence.
  • Drive architectural standard processes and pivotal initiatives for database systems to enable high availability, scalability and performance.
  • Develop and implement database systems standards, guidelines and processes to ensure consistency, predictability, quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate across internal IT teams, including development and service towers, to ensure database solutions align with application and business-specific requirements.
  • Plan and develop overall strategies for the future database systems landscape; applying metrics and customer/collaborator feedback to instill and perpetuate a high degree of coordination between services towers, database systems, and related teams to ensure effective data management as a combined organization.

Execution & Delivery

  • Implement and maintain distributed database systems, optimizing for performance, fault tolerance, security and technical/disaster recovery.
  • Ensure effective database versioning, schema management, and backward/forward compatibility to support continuous development and legacy application environments.
  • Oversee the day-to-day management, administration and related operations of all Oracle, SQL and related database systems (including Oracle Exadata) to ensure robust and available database solutions to enable high-volume transactional workloads.
  • Lead incidents and root cause analysis-related efforts to support resolution(s) for database-related incidents; driving accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Is a trusted advisor and builds and manages relationships with the Ferguson Technology leadership team to develop a clear understanding of business needs; ensuring cost-effective delivery of applicable database systems services to meet those needs; maintaining agility to changing business priorities.
  • Develops and is accountable for the annual operating and capital expenditure budget as it relates to database systems-related areas.
  • Works closely with the CISO and our Security/Compliance teams to ensure SOX compliance and adherence to all defined security policies, requirements and procedures.

  • Responsible for driving the Ferguson culture through values and customer service standards.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships through effective and timely communication.
  • Takes initiative and action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner.
  • Adhering to all policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Performing other duties or functions as requested by management.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent experience in a directly related field.
  • At least eight (8) to ten (10) years of proven ability leading technical teams in an enterprise environment; ideally in database operations, IT leadership and infrastructure leadership-related roles.
  • Thorough understanding of database technologies, primarily Oracle and SQL Server along with database management and security concepts.
  • Experience in database concepts, design, deployment with SQL & Oracle relational database design.
  • Experience with Oracle Exadata is preferred.
  • Willingness to work with teams of varying levels of technical expertise in a high-pressure and sophisticated database systems environment.
  • Knowledge of database monitoring and management systems.
  • Expert knowledge of logical and physical database designs in an enterprise and multi-cloud environment.
  • Solid background in database operations strategy and planning.
  • Experience with SAN and NAS storage and how applied by database systems in the enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities of 10 or more highly skilled technical staff charged with designing, engineering, implementing and supporting database infrastructures within the enterprise environment.
  • Deep understanding of computer systems characteristics, features and integration capabilities.
  • Proven leadership ability instilling confidence and demonstrate the business value of IT.
  • In-depth working knowledge of key network, data center and related infrastructure technologies.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate a vision that inspires and motivates staff and aligns to the IT and business strategy.
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment where resources are contended and navigating constantly changing priorities.
  • Strong analytical and creative thinking abilities.
  • Strong business sense, including industry, domain-specific knowledge of the enterprise and its business.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a strategic people plan that ensures that the right people are in the right roles at the right time and that employees are highly engaged and satisfied.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and technologies to business leaders, and business concepts across the workforce.
  • Ability to empower in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Actual pay rate may vary depending upon location. The estimated pay range for this position is below. The specific rate will depend on a candidate’s qualifications and prior experience.
