As a traveling salesman of grain milling equipment, Merwin consistently encountered a pervasive and costly problem among his clients: ferrous metal contamination. Stray pieces of iron, from tiny wires to large bolts and even horseshoes, would find their way into the grain stream, causing severe damage to milling machinery and posing a significant fire risk. Driven by a desire to solve this persistent issue, Merwin dedicated himself to finding a solution. In his basement, he developed the first-ever permanent magnetic plate separator, a revolutionary device designed to protect grain millers from the dangers of tramp metal. This single invention laid the groundwork for what would become a world-renowned company.
