Senior Director – Business Insights & Analytics (BI&A) – AI and ML Operations Engineering, is responsible for leading AI development and operationalization, ensuring scalable, secure, and efficient deployment of AI and ML solutions for commercialization. This position reports to the Associate Vice President (AVP) of BI&A Data Science.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership (30%)

  • Collaborate with your counterparts across BI&A to develop and execute a unified enterprise AI strategy aligned with business objectives and digital transformation goals

  • Champion responsible AI practices, ensuring compliance with governance, security, and ethical standards

  • Develop deep understanding of business goals and challenges, and translate into clear work streams with appropriate methodology and solutions for execution that will meaningfully drive results

  • Work with your team and across BI&A to present complex concepts and technical processes in an easily digestible format and create organizational buy-in for recommendations

  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, internal security standards, and best practices; identifying gaps and leading creation of new policies and frameworks where needed

  • Manage a wide variety of senior stakeholders and junior colleagues as a part of a highly matrixed global organization

  • Foster innovation by sourcing innovative concepts from internal and external functions

AI and ML Leadership and Capability Building (50%)

  • Efficiently and effectively lead AI and ML team in US and in partnership with LBI (India based) team

  • Provide dotted-line supervision and project oversight for LBI teammates, in partnership with LBI Team Leader

  • Collaborate with BI&A and GCO teams to integrate AI into core business processes, aligning stakeholders on priorities and roadmap

  • Lead design and implementation of AI solutions, including generative AI and intelligent automation

  • Partner with data engineering and product teams to ensure seamless integration of AI solutions

  • Oversee end-to-end ML lifecycle management and provide observability frameworks including drift detection, logging, and automated alerts

  • Establish robust CI/CD pipelines to ensure reproducibility, security, and performance

  • Lead team in building scalable ML pipelines and ensure modular, production-ready code and promote best practices in ML engineering across broader data science team

  • Leverage organizational resources to mentor and educate colleagues to increase AI knowledge and ML knowledge

Team Development (20%)

  • Influence and be vocal proponent for AI and MLOps headcount needs, ensuring critical Business Plan, Buy Up and Global Business Solutions proposals are developed in accordance with the critical BI&A objectives that require advanced analytics expertise and are aligned with the BI&A resourcing needs to deliver on those objectives

  • Recruit and hire top talent with the team

  • Develop a pipeline of advanced analytics talent and contribute to an inclusive community of analytics expert practitioners

  • Foster an environment that prioritizes the team’s professional and personal development while simultaneously ensuring the team’s overall wellbeing

  • Participate in and support the team in the technical promotion process

  • Create a diverse and collaborative team environment that ultimately leads to a highly engaged team and positive team culture

Basic Requirements:

  • PhD or master's in computer science, Statistics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, or field of experience of relevant experience leading an advanced analytical function

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

Additional Preferences:

  • Strong business acumen, and an ability to think strategically in an ambiguous environment

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deploy AI solutions across enterprise environments

  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native architectures, ML frameworks, ML platform engineering, and orchestration tools

  • Proficient in at least one programming package such (Python preferred)

  • Experience using common data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI) and visualization packages and frameworks (e.g., Seaborn, Plotly, Flask, RShiny)

  • Broad awareness and working knowledge of advanced analytics areas such ML, NLP, optimization, and Predictive Analytics

  • Excellent communication (written & verbal), interpersonal influencing skills and prioritization skills with attention to detail

  • Demonstrated ability to influence change with senior stakeholders at the AVP level

  • PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, or closely related with 3+ years of experience or Master’s degree in those fields with 6+ years of relevant experience leading an advanced analytical function

  • Strong track record of leading global and cross-functional teams to deliver and delivering complex cross functional projects

  • Substantial AI / ML experience and understanding of complexities in specialty markets, analytics techniques and US pharmaceutical business

  • Experience working with common US healthcare datasets a plus

  • Proven ability to rally resources to achieve project and business results

  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Demonstrated ability to enforce business rules and policies in a constructive but disciplined manner

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$169,500 - $275,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
