Election Commission of India

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering Union and State election processes in India. Through groundbreaking technology and a steadfast commitment to democratic principles, the ECI is revolutionizing the electoral landscape of the world's largest democracy. Established on January 25, 1950, under Article 324 of the Constitution, the ECI has been vested with the monumental task of superintendence, direction, and control of the entire process for conducting elections to Parliament and Legislature of every State and to the offices of President and Vice-President of India. This mandate ensures the bedrock of Indian democracy remains strong by facilitating free and fair elections at regular intervals. The Commission's headquarters are in New Delhi.

Innovation has been a cornerstone of the ECI's operations. To prevent electoral fraud, Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) were introduced in 1993. The ECI has also embraced technological advancements to enhance efficiency and transparency, developing a suite of approximately 20 applications, including mobile apps, to manage the electoral process from voter registration to the declaration of results. These include tools like the Voter Helpline Mobile App, cVIGIL for reporting violations, and the EVM Management System. The ECI also leverages technology like machine learning and database matching to ensure accurate voter rolls. Furthermore, the ECI has actively partnered with social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to raise voter awareness and encourage participation, particularly among young and first-time voters. The Commission continuously works on process simplification and proactive interventions to make the electoral process more inclusive and accessible. It prepares, maintains, and updates the electoral roll, issues Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs), and enforces a Model Code of Conduct for political parties and candidates. The ECI also plays a quasi-judicial role by settling disputes between splinter groups of recognized political parties and advising on post-election disqualifications.
