About CoLab

At CoLab, we want to help mechanical engineering teams bring life-changing products to market years sooner.

CoLab is a cloud based platform purpose built for fast, effective design review. Using CoLab, multiple engineers, designers, and other stakeholders can review designs together and build off one another's feedback. Engineers at companies like Ford, Komatsu, and Johnson Controls use CoLab to review designs faster, prevent mistakes, and build the next generation of innovative products.

About the Role

This is a new, hands-on role designed to bridge a critical gap between mechanical engineering domain expertise and how our ML-powered evaluation tools operate. You’ll be the go-to Mechanical Engineer helping the team validate and improve AutoReview — our internal system that uses AI to classify and assess mechanical designs at scale.

You’ll run hundreds of design files through AutoReview, interpret the results, and help the team understand: Are we getting meaningful insights? What are we missing? What should change in how we prompt the system? Your analysis will directly shape how CoLab uses LLMs and machine learning to automate design feedback — one of our most ambitious and technically challenging projects to date.

If you’re energized by the idea of blending traditional mechanical engineering with next-gen AI tooling, and you thrive in early-stage product ambiguity, you’ll find this role deeply rewarding.

Our Ideal Candidate

You’re a mechanical engineer with strong instincts around design quality and lifecycle workflows — maybe you’ve worked in or alongside a design firm, or have spent time on the tools yourself. You’re curious and comfortable digging into data-heavy workflows, and you don’t mind reviewing a hundred outputs to get to a real insight.

You don’t need to be an AI expert — but you’re excited to learn how prompting, LLMs, and AutoReview work. You can sit down with a Dev or ML Engineer and clearly articulate, “This result isn’t useful because it’s missing X, Y, and Z.”

You’re opinionated enough to spot a flaw in a system, but humble enough to ask questions first. You’re still close to the work of mechanical design and aren’t afraid to dive into the weeds — but you’re also energized by new ways of doing things.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Running design evaluations through AutoReview, analyzing results, and classifying output qualityIdentifying gaps in model performance and communicating them clearly to ML and product teamsCollaborating with internal experts to triangulate insights and evolve internal systemsSupporting prompt tuning and testing to improve how we communicate with LLMsProviding ongoing feedback that helps us train AutoReview on the kinds of issues real engineers care aboutActing as a domain expert to help CoLab better understand the real-world context behind the data.

Qualifications

Must-Haves

  • 3-6 years in mechanical engineering with recent hands-on experience in the design lifecycle
  • Deep understanding design review workflows within engineering organizations
  • Experience working with or for a design firm or engineering consultancy
  • Ability to interpret and clearly explain model outputs from a mechanical design perspective, applying commonly used standards and guidelines such as ASME, ASTM, and related industry standards.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with large volumes of data
  • Direct experience bringing component, parts and assemblies to production, working through multiple DFM/DFA cycles
  • Experience designing in a primary CAD tool alongside PDM/PLM

Nice-to-Haves

  • Familiarity with prompt engineering or LLM workflows
  • Experience with applied ML/AI tools in a product or research context
  • Exposure to design automation or digital engineering systems

What Success Looks Like

In your first 90 days, you’ll:

Get up to speed on AutoReview with support from our Solution Engineers and a tailored onboarding planEvaluate hundreds of outputs and provide feedback that drives measurable improvements in model performanceHelp uncover patterns in how engineers interpret results — and use those insights to tune our system

Become a trusted internal expert for the product and applied ML teams when it comes to mechanical design judgment

Extra Details

  • Compensation: This is a full-time, permanent position with a competitive compensation package that includes a stock options package
  • Benefits: This role offers an extended health and benefits package that includes unlimited paid vacation and RRSP matching
  • Remote/Hybrid Work: Our main office is in St. John’s, NL, where we offer hybrid and remote opportunities. This role has the flexibility to work from anywhere within Canada.

Equity Note

Frequently cited statistics show that people who identify with historically marginalized groups are likely to apply to jobs only if they meet 100% of the qualifications. We encourage you to help us break that statistic and apply even if you don’t meet every single qualification — your potential is what matters most to us.

Reinventing the way engineering teams design collaboratively. Our mission is to build the future — faster.

Our founders are mechanical engineers who've worked on innovative technology ranging from advanced medical devices and electric cars to breakthrough Hyperloop pod design and billion-dollar energy projects. But across the industry, no matter what tech they worked on, one thing was always the same: every team was stuck using archaic processes for working together—and it was slowing them down.

So, instead of wishing and waiting for a better way, Adam and Jeremy parked their design careers... and started building the tools engineers deserve.

Culture and values

Kindness and Respect Come First

  • We treat one another with respect.

  • We are kind to ourselves and others even when times are tough.

  • We seek to understand, and are transparent when we need help.

  • We have hard conversations and openly provide constructive feedback.

Ownership mentality

  • We take responsibility for outcomes and not just outputs: “It’s up to me to close the loop, not just check the box.”

  • We don’t give up the first time we hit a roadblock. We set clear goals and we stay focused on them until we succeed.

  • We take initiative, both within and outside our direct area of responsibility.

  • We operate with a healthy dose of paranoia: never panicked, but always trying to see around corners and anticipate challenges before they derail a product launch, customer onboarding, or sales opportunity

Better Everyday

  • We’re hungry, eager to solve tough problems, succeed in challenging roles, and work with people that push us to be our best

  • We make the best decisions we can, knowing no decision is still a decision and forward motion is better. We know that every step forward, big or small, builds momentum.

  • We strive for excellence in everything we do — we never settle.

  • We measure our progress — what’s visible can be improved.

One Team, One Mission

  • We always act in the best interest of our customers and CoLab.

  • We are the teammate we want to work with — we get what we give.

  • We are disciplined. We don’t get distracted by shiny objects.

What we look for in candidates

  • Grit: The average person would think that every job at CoLab is too hard. But if you love a challenge and seek excellence in everything you do, you will thrive here.

  • Business and technical acumen: CoLab is a complex product with lots of use cases. Our messaging is nuanced. We’re creating a new category of software, and nobody has a budget for it - yet. We’ll train you on how to overcome all of these obstacles, but you must come willing and able to learn.

  • Coachable team players: We’re looking for people that care about the success of the team as much or more than their individual success. Succeeding at CoLab requires a growth mindset and the ability to gracefully respond to constructive feedback.

  • Confidence, with low ego: You can hold your own in a conversation with a customer or a vendor. You can clearly communicate feedback to anyone at any level of the company – and you treat each of them with respect.
