Clēnera's journey began in 2013, co-founded by Jason Ellsworth and Adam Pishl, two long-time friends and business partners with a shared vision for a cleaner energy future. From its headquarters in Boise, Idaho, Clēnera set out to acquire, develop, build, and manage utility-scale solar farms and energy storage facilities across the United States. Their early focus was on combining breakthrough technology with a deeply integrated team approach, aiming to provide reliable and affordable energy solutions. This commitment quickly positioned them as a key player in helping utility partners meet their renewable energy goals and establish themselves as clean energy leaders within their communities.

A significant milestone in Clēnera's story occurred in June 2021 when Enlight Renewable Energy, a global renewable energy developer and independent power producer, acquired a majority stake in the company. This partnership marked a new chapter of accelerated growth, providing Clēnera with additional scale and financial strength to expand its already impressive project pipeline. Before this acquisition, Jason and Adam had also co-founded Sunlight Partners in 2010, one of North America's most successful distributed generation developers, where Adam's operational expertise led to the creation of an industry-first programmatic solar project development system. Jason's extensive background in technology, solar, manufacturing, development, and project finance has been instrumental in steering Clēnera's efficient, vertically-integrated approach. Today, Clēnera continues to be a U.S. subsidiary of Enlight, dedicated to building better projects to not only produce renewable energy but also to improve local economies and empower investments in the communities where their projects operate, striving to make generational improvements for the world.
