Unity

Unity is a leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D (RT3D) content, serving industries from gaming to automotive and film.

About Unity

The story of Unity begins not with a blockbuster game, but with the tools to create one. In 2004, in Copenhagen, Denmark, three visionaries, David Helgason, Nicholas Francis, and Joachim Ante, founded a company named Over the Edge Entertainment. Their first and only game, 'GooBall', released in 2005, didn't achieve commercial success. However, this perceived failure held the seed of a much grander idea. The trio recognized that the real value wasn't in the game itself, but in the powerful, streamlined engine they had built to create it. They saw an opportunity to democratize game development, to make the creation of interactive 2D and 3D content accessible to everyone, from hobbyists to large studios. With this new mission, they pivoted, and in 2007, the company was reborn as Unity Technologies.

This shift in focus proved to be a pivotal moment. Unity's core philosophy was to provide a user-friendly, intuitive platform that would empower creators without requiring deep coding knowledge. This approach resonated strongly with the burgeoning indie developer community. The launch of the Unity Asset Store in 2010 was another game-changer, creating a marketplace where developers could buy and sell pre-made assets, further lowering the barrier to entry and fostering a collaborative ecosystem. Over the years, Unity expanded its capabilities far beyond gaming. Its real-time 3D development platform found applications in diverse industries like film and animation, architecture, automotive design, and engineering. The company went public in September 2020, marking a major milestone in its journey from a small Danish startup to a global powerhouse. Despite leadership changes and market fluctuations, Unity's fundamental mission remains: to put powerful creative tools into the hands of creators worldwide, believing that the world is a better place with more creators in it.
