BIXI Montréal

BIXI Montréal is a non-profit organization that manages the bike-sharing service in the Greater Montreal area and across 13 cities in Quebec. As the first Canadian bikeshare system and the first large-scale system in North America, BIXI has established itself as a key player in Montreal's public transit ecosystem since its inception. The organization was created in 2014 by the City of Montreal to manage and operate the city's bike-sharing network, which now comprises over 12,500 bikes and more than 1,000 stations. BIXI's name comes from a contraction of 'bicycle' and 'taxi,' selected through a public contest that engaged the community in naming the system.

BIXI's mission is to transform the urban experience through active, accessible, innovative, and collaborative mobility solutions. By 2022, the system had reached a remarkable milestone of 50 million trips since launching, demonstrating its integral role in Montrealers' daily lives. The organization continues to expand and innovate, offering year-round service, electric bikes, and a mobile app that enhances user experience while promoting sustainable urban transportation. BIXI remains committed to weaving itself into the city's DNA, facilitating everything from daily commutes to family gatherings, while pushing for greater recognition as an essential component of public transit infrastructure.
