About Auckland Council
We're the local government council serving over 1.5 million Aucklanders, and we're here to help our city thrive. We were established in November 2010 when eight previous councils merged into one "supercity" - a change designed to give Auckland a stronger voice and better coordination across the region. Our team of thousands works across everything from maintaining local roads, parks, and libraries to managing water services, rubbish collection, and building consents. We're not your typical corporate organisation - we're a public service focused on making Auckland a better place for everyone who lives here.
Our governance model brings together elected members (the mayor, 20 councillors, and 21 local boards) who make decisions, while our organisation led by the chief executive delivers services and implements those decisions. We work closely with council-controlled organisations that look after specific assets like transport and water infrastructure. Whether we're processing resource consents, running community programmes, maintaining regional parks, or responding to emergency situations, our work directly impacts the daily lives of Aucklanders. We're committed to continuous improvement, flexible working for our staff, and building a city that's sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous for future generations.
